Chapter 251
Vance was stunned.
“Look. A woman’s heart is the softest, kindest thing there is. Treat her right and mean it, and she’ll feel it. Just get home, apologize, and own the whole mess, whether you’re right or wrong. Quit reaching for the bottle every time things get rough. Drinking only makes her madder, right? Call her the second you get home. Ask where she is and if she has enough money. Pick her up when she lands and live happily ever after. Sound good?” the driver said, grinning.
He paused, then continued, “Don’t mind me running my mouth. I can tell you’re a decent guy who usually treats his wife right. Rich or broke, taking care of her is what matters. I drive for a living and make peanuts compared to you, but I keep my wife right here in the palm of my hand, making her happy every day. Just call your wife, say good morning, and tell her you’ve been thinking about her all night. Make it sweet.”
Vance smiled faintly but didn’t move.
“What, shy?” the driver teased.
Vance held up his phone. “The battery’s almost dead.”
“Uh, just remember my words,” the driver said.
Vance stared at the screen. The phone hadn’t buzzed all night and now showed only a sliver of power.
It was 7 a.m., and he automatically calculated the time difference before the screen went black for good.
Arriving at the destination, the driver reminded him one last time, “Go on and apologize to her properly, okay? Don’t take offense. I’m just looking out for you.”
Vance waved goodbye with a smile and headed inside.
The first thing he did was plug in his phone, then he stripped for a shower. As he pulled off his shirt, he spotted a fresh fingernail scratch across his chest.
He frowned, finished washing quickly, and grabbed his phone to call Catherine.
“I’m sorry, Cathy. Yesterday, I…” he started. 2
“No worries,” she cut in brightly. “It’s only right for you to visit Rebecca’s grandmother. I’m not an unreasonable person. I was just worried something might happen to you when you were drunk like that. Thankfully, everything is fine.”
“I was afraid I might have done something inappropriate,” he said, carefully choosing his words.
“No way. I just didn’t have my slippers on right. It wasn’t you pushing me. Don’t worry about it,” she explained.
He let out a quiet breath of relief.

Thankfully, nothing had happened between them. Maybe it was only a branch scratch from the countryside.
“How are you feeling? Any sickness?” she asked with concern.
“I’m fine. I’ll head to the office soon,” he answered, lying down.
She chatted about nothing important for a while before hanging up. Only then did he notice the driver hadn’t accepted the money.
He had sent it through the app, but it bounced back. The guy’s name was Mike Peterson.
Vance texted: [Mike, accept the payment.]
Mike sent a voice note: “It’s fine, man.”
Vance insisted, “Come on, Mike. Your advice today was gold. Consider it tuition.”
Mike laughed. “Nah, regular folks don’t charge for that. We just crossed paths; that’s fate. Oh, and happy birthday.”
