She glared at Desmond. “Didn’t you hate her? Didn’t she hurt you so badly? Why won’t you stand with me? We’re on the same side in this. You could get your revenge and help me at the same time.”

Desmond’s gaze grew distant. “When did I ever say I hated her?”

“You did when you first got back! You wouldn’t even let anyone mention her. You’d explode and tell everyone to get lost. Said you never wanted to hear her name again!” Margaret recounted every detail like an accusation.

Of course, Desmond remembered. He remembered every bit of the love and madness he had poured into that relationship. He laughed, but it was filled with sadness. “Is that what you call hate? If so, then yeah, I guess I hated her.”

“So, why are you still defending her at every turn?” Margaret yelled.

His gaze became heated. “Because I love her. Why does hate exist? Because of love. When you can’t have what you love, it drives you crazy.”

“But she hurt you! Wake up!” she screamed.

His smile became bitter. “If I could, I’d let her hurt me again. Too bad I can’t even do that anymore. She won’t even give me that chance.”

“Are you insane?” Margaret didn’t get it, but her heart ached so badly.

She had loved him for so many years, but he hadn’t cared. Yet someone who didn’t give a damn about him had him obsessed.

Desmond headed upstairs, muttering, “Insane? Yes, I am.”

Behind him, she shouted, “Wake up! You’re not insane, and you don’t love her. You’re just confused. What has she done to you, turning you into such a fool?”

He wiped his tears and walked up the stairs without responding.

“Snap out of it!” she cried. “I’m the one who loves you the most! I’m the one who’s crazy about you! I love you, and I hate you! But I can’t let you go. Even if you treat me like this, I still love you!”

She rushed out of the house.
