Chapter 640
Rebecca took the cakes. “Okay”
Vance blinked. “What?”
“You said we’re even,” Rebecca replied calmly “You ate my pumpkin pie, and I ate your pasta. We don’t owe each other anything now. That’s good.”
Emotions swirled in his striking eyes.
Perhaps the 16–year–old Rebecca had fallen for the same–aged Vance because, on some sunny day, she had stumbled into those limpid eyes. But his eyes rarely rippled for anyone or anything; he looked at everyone with that same calm detachment.
Yet at this moment, they churned with complex emotions–annoyance, frustration, unwillingness, restraint, and something deeper she couldn’t quite name.
“Do you have no heart?” he said through gritted teeth.
She touched her chest. This was the first time anyone had said that to her, but she offered no explanation. As she looked at the vibrant, stubborn teenage boy before her, her eyes suddenly burned.
In real life, she was already in her thirties. They had both weathered storms and hardships. In the end, she still didn’t know
whether she and he would be parted by life or death.
If everything could start over, how comforting it would be to see such a vibrant life!
“I’m going home. Thank you.” She raised the paper bag in her hand. As a gift, Vance had put a few sample macarons in her bag. My grandma will love these colorful treats.”
She turned and left the shop. Outside, the setting sun was blinding. For some reason, tears suddenly streamed down her face.
The rebirth stories she had read were always driven by powerful obsessions. Had she returned because of her own, or someone else’s?
Whoever it belonged to, she hoped with all her heart that this was real -so everyone could live their lives fully this time, and pass away peacefully in old age instead of disappearing too soon or vanishing without a trace.
A voice came from behind her. “Why are you crying?”
Vance had followed her out and appeared before her so abruptly that she didn’t have time to wipe her tears.
