Chapter 646
Irene cooked all of Vance’s favpilte dishes that evening. They ever shared some soda.
While they were eating, she told him she was planning in go on a short trip with some old friends and asked if he would be okay taking care of himself for a few days.
Vance’s face lit up. He had always hoped his grandmother could enjoy her later years freely and happily, without being tied down by him.
“Of course, Grandma!” he agreed immediately. “I’m not a kid anymore. I can take care of myself.”
Irene gently smiled at him.
In the hospital’s residential building, Dr. Blake Horton had a visitor.
Darren arrived with a cheerful grin, carrying a box of Blake’s favorite pastries. Blake snorted at the sight. “Nothing good comes without a price.”
“Grandpa Blake, come on. I really did come just to see you,” Darren chuckled.
Blake was Darren’s grandfather’s younger brother.
“You rascal!” Blake laughed. “I’ve already taken care of everything. The old lady will be admitted tomorrow. After this, don’t come bother me again. You’re like a fly buzzing around my head and giving me a headache.”
“You’re talking nonsense again!” His wife came over and scolded him. “It’s a good thing our kid isn’t petty. Anyone else would’ve been driven sick by your attitude.”
“It’s fine, Grandma Cheryl. He is just teasing me,” Darren grinned.
“Who’s teasing you?” Blake snorted. “You think a box of pastries is enough to settle it?”
Darren stroked his chin. “Then how about I play a few more games of chess with you?”
Blake’s eyes brightened instantly. “That’s more like it.”
“About his grandmother… I’ll need you to help arrange a caregiver, too. My classmate is still in school and doesn’t have time to take care of her. Can we get four caregivers?” Darren probed, observing Blake’s expression.
Blake’s eyes narrowed, and Darren quickly added, “I’ll pay for everything. Won’t let you spend a dime.”
r
“Obviously! When did I ever say I would cover it?” Blake gave him a light knock on the head with his pen. “You wish!”
“Then…” Darren rubbed his head.
“Four caregivers? That’s impossible. The ward isn’t that big, and there are other patients. If four caregivers crowd in, there won’t be room for anyone else,” Blake said.
“Don’t pick up those extravagant habits. Having money doesn’t mean you show off like that. The hospital has clear rules for how many caregivers are allowed per patient. We follow the regulations.”
“Yes, Grandpa Blake!” Darren said happily.
Blake set up the chessboard, but his brow furrowed. “How did you know that old lady was sick? She didn’t show any obvious symptoms.”
Darren paused. “I heard about it from my classmate.”
