Chapter 671
The conversation about taking Josette abroad came up again, but josette remained firm in her refusal–she couldn’t bear to leave Rebecca behind.
No matter how Rebecca explained that she would finish her undergraduate degree in the States before joining them, or how she insisted she was perfectly capable of living independently, Josette simply shook her head.
Gabriel promised he would arrange everything so Rebecca would face no difficulties or dangers. Still, Josette refused.
Eventually, both Kaitlyn and Gabriel accepted they wouldn’t be able to change her mind. So, Gabriel made other plans. For days, he had been scouting properties around Soliaridge.
“We’ve found a house we like,” he said. “We’ll go see it tomorrow. If Grandma approves, we’ll buy it immediately.”
Rebecca asked where it was. When Gabriel gave the address, she froze because it was the same villa he had bought in the original timeline. Now they were getting it ahead of schedule.
When Josette heard it was an enormous villa, she waved her hands in protest. “That won’t do. A place that big is wasted on me. I’m used to suburban life; it’s convenient for growing things.”
“The new house has plenty of space for you to plant flowers and vegetables,” Gabriel explained. “Besides, it won’t just be you and Becky. My mom and I will move in there, too.”
Josette’s eyes lit up. “You’re staying?”
“I think the investment climate here is excellent right now,” Gabriel explained to Kaitlyn. “I’m seriously considering opening a
U.S. branch.”
He turned back to Josette. “So, I’ll be returning often.”
There would also be drivers, bodyguards, chefs, and gardeners plenty of staff to keep the household running smoothly.
“Mom,” Kaitlyn started, sitting next to Josette, “this is my way of showing my filial piety. You’ve worked so hard over the years. Since Gabriel is considering investing here, it makes sense for him to have a proper home base.”
Josette finally nodded. “All right, then. But don’t put my name on the deed. Whoever buys it should be the legal owner.”
“Alright.” Kaitlyn nodded happily.
With that, Josette’s living arrangements were settled. Rebecca would move in with her.
With Gabriel’s careful planning, Rebecca no longer had to fear her greedy parents trying to exploit her nor worry that Josette would ever suffer abuse again.
If this truly was a second chance, then every person and every event seemed to be moving in a better direction.
When Rebecca went to bed that night, a deep sense of peace settled over her. She slept soundly and sweetly.
Outside, however, a violent rainstorm raged.
While Vance drifted off, murmuring the line “O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumn’s being,” the wind and rain began to howl.
It poured all night. Sycamore leaves were battered down, and gardenias in Josette’s yard lay scattered across the ground. The rain released their rich fragrance into the air, filling the night with an intoxicating floral scent.
A summer rain like this was perfect for sleeping. Cradled in that sweet perfume, Rebecca didn’t want to wake up. But she had class in the morning.
“Becky? Becky?” Kaitlyn’s voice seemed to be calling her.
