Chapter 704
Rebecca was dazed by the turn of events, and Catherine’s sobbing act was cut short.
“Jenny is bold and loyal. Rebecca is gentle and genuine. They’re not the kind of people you’re imagining,” Vance continued firmly.
The two girls exchanged a surprised glance. They couldn’t believe he was actually defending them for once.
Catherine couldn’t keep the act up anymore. Her tearful mask cracked, shifting into a strained smile before she quickly melted back into an expression of deep grievance.
“Then… maybe I got it wrong. I don’t really know them. I’m sorry.”
She stepped over to the two girls and squeezed out a painful, apologetic smile through her remaining tears.
“Rebecca, Jenny, I’m so sorry. Can you ever forgive me? I actually… wanted to be friends with you guys. I was just always so scared… that you wouldn’t accept someone like me.”
By now, a good portion of the crowd that had swarmed into Vance’s restaurant drifted back out. Since the place was completely packed, they had no choice but to wait outside for tables.
Combined with the regular mall foot traffic, the area outside the storefront grew rowdy and crowded once again.
The moment Catherine saw the fresh audience, her urge to perform kicked right back into high gear. Rubbing at her eyes, she started sobbing anew.
“I really wanted to be friends with you. I know you guys come from wealthy families, and I’m out of your league. But I… just transferred here. I don’t have any friends.”
That was unbelievable. She claimed she was apologizing, yet here she was, hijacking the moral high ground all over again.
“Y–Yes,” Catherine stammered timidly. “Are you looking down on me because of that?”
“Not at all.” Rebecca waved a hand. “I’m just curious. Why are you wearing a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet? And that skirt you have on… is from Miu Miu, isn’t it?”
Instantly, every eye in the vicinity locked onto her wrist and outfit. Even her coworkers from the bistro turned to look at her with narrowed eyes.
A wave of sheer panic washed over Catherine. Her knee–jerk instinct was to hide her wrist, but she quickly realized that pulling away now was impossible and would only scream guilt.
Instead, she awkwardly shook her wrist and stammered, “What brand is this? Is it famous? I don’t know anything about that… It’s just a knockoff.”
But the moment the words left her mouth, she realized that in her blind panic, she had just given the worst possible defense. Helplessly, her eyes darted straight toward Vance, desperate to gauge his reaction.
