No one was in the living room.
Just as she was about to head upstairs, she heard voices coming from the study.
“Cassian, her reputation is in tatters. Isn’t it a waste for her to get the five percent of the company shares Grandfather left her in his will?”
It was Lilian.
Grace froze.
A will? Shares?
She never knew her grandfather had included her in his will.
Then, she heard Cassian’s voice.
“Grandfather’s will has already been probated. We can’t touch it.”
Lilian’s voice grew urgent. “Then what do we do? Are we just going to watch her walk away with all that money? That’s millions of dollars!”
“Calm down.”
Cassian let out a cold laugh.
“She’s being torn apart online and she’s lost her job. Ethan called me too. He said he’s cut her off financially. From what he said, she hasn't been in her right mind these past few days.”
“We can petition the court to become her legal guardians, on the grounds that she’s mentally incompetent and unable to manage her own assets.”
“Once that happens, the shares in her name will naturally be managed by us.”
A sudden chill ran through Grace.
They were even scheming to take the little money her grandfather had left for her...
So that was it...
Not only did they not love her or comfort her, but they were also planning to squeeze her dry of every last resource when she was at her lowest, before throwing her into the abyss.
Family?
What a joke.
She staggered back a step, accidentally bumping into a vase behind her.
CRASH—
“Who’s out there?!”
He felt that it was Grace's very existence that had made him so despicable.
“Since you love clinging to the Hart family so much, let me help you sever those ties for good!”
Cassian dragged her up to the second floor and kicked open the door to her small room.
There wasn’t much inside, just a single, worn-out suitcase.
It was the one she had brought from her grandmother’s house in the country. It contained all her treasures—a photograph of her mother, a handmade doll stitched by her grandmother, and... a box full of all her research manuscripts and notes from the past few years.
Without a second glance, Cassian grabbed the suitcase and headed downstairs.
“Cassian, no!” Grace realized what he was about to do and lunged at him like a madwoman, trying to snatch the suitcase back.
But Cassian acted as if he hadn’t heard her, carrying the suitcase down the stairs.
“Cassian, I’m begging you!”
Grace chased after him, but in her haste, she missed a step. A sharp pain shot through her ankle as she twisted it.
Ignoring the pain, she reached out, desperately trying to grab onto Cassian.
