That period was the most peaceful and happiest time Grace had experienced since returning to the Hart family.
Unfortunately, the good times didn't last.
The Clarke family’s crisis worsened.
Finally, it reached a point where they could barely afford St. Clarion Academy's steep tuition fees.
Grace overheard it by chance outside the dean’s office.
She saw the boy who had always been so proud, who never bent his back for anyone, lower his head for the first time, his voice almost pleading with the dean.
“Sir, please, just give me a few more days…”
Grace didn’t go home after school that day.
She took a bus to a bank downtown by herself.
She took out a bank card she had treasured for a long time.
It held an education fund her mother had left her.
It was her only connection to her mother and her last safety net in the cold Hart household.
She had once thought about using that money to leave the Harts, to go somewhere no one knew her and start over.
But now, she felt Damien needed the money more.
She walked up to the counter and spoke to the teller in a clear, firm voice.
“Hi, I’d like to make a withdrawal. Everything.”
Carrying what was a huge sum of cash for a high school student, she returned to the school.
She found the finance office and, under the guise of an “anonymous scholarship,” paid Damien’s entire tuition and fees for his remaining two years of high school in one go.
After doing all this, she let out a long sigh of relief, as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
She could work part-time for living expenses or earn scholarships.
But Damien’s future couldn’t be cut short here.
She thought her plan was foolproof.
She never expected Damien to corner her on the rooftop the very next day.
The boy stared at her, his eyes red.
“Why?”
He looked at the girl in front of him, his heart feeling like it was going to burst out of his chest.
He wanted to hold her, to tell her she was the only light in his life.
But he couldn’t do anything… he had nothing.
He couldn’t give her any promises, he couldn’t even protect her.
He could only use all his strength to burn her name, her face, and every word she said into his very soul.
From that day on, Damien was like a different person.
He was no longer silent or dejected.
He started studying like his life depended on it, and his grades skyrocketed at an almost terrifying pace.
He began learning to handle his family’s complex business affairs.
He started running around, negotiating and working tirelessly for his imprisoned father.
Everyone said the golden boy of the Clarke family was back.
And he was even more formidable than before.
