The sudden shout jolted Layla from a deep sleep. She bolted up, heart pounding, to find Shane sitting frozen beside her, his face pale with horror.
She wrapped an arm around his shoulders, her voice soft with concern. “Hey, what’s wrong? Bad dream?”
Hearing her voice seemed to break the nightmare’s hold.
Shane turned and pulled her into a tight embrace, his own voice trembling slightly. “It was awful. There were… walking corpses everywhere. And they got you.”
A shiver ran down Layla’s spine.
He’s dreaming about my past. About before I came here.
She cleared her throat gently, reaching up to ruffle his hair with a soothing touch. “It’s just a dream, sweetie. You’ve been way too stressed lately, that’s all.”
Shane wanted to believe her. It made sense.
Yet the dream’s terrifying logic felt too complete, too real to be born from simple anxiety alone.
Seeing the lingering doubt in his eyes, Layla gave his head a gentle pat, leaning in to meet his
gaze.
A teasing smile played on her lips as she offered another explanation. “Who knows? Maybe it was a memory. My past life, or something.”
The suggestion brought a shadow of sadness to Shane’s eyes. “If that was your past life… you had it really rough, didn’t you?”
His genuine worry over a mere dream and some reincarnation nonsense was too much.
Layla couldn’t help but laugh, the sound bright in the dark room. “Oh, come on. It’s just a dream! I’m right here, safe and sound. Those things aren’t happening to me now, are they?”
Her words settled him, as she knew they would.
Holding her close, Shane lay back down, though tension still laced his words. “Try to get some

more sleep. I need to work on something for you before you head out tomorrow.”
Layla didn’t argue because she knew stopping him was pointless.
He wouldn’t rest until he’d done this.

With a quiet, fond sigh, she shook her head and closed her eyes, slipping back into sleep with surprising case.
By the time dawn light filtered into the room, Shane was still at his workbench, the steady scrape of metal against stone filling the air.
Layla stretched languidly, sitting up.
Hearing her stir, Shane glanced over his shoulder, a tired but genuine smile lighting his face. “Awake?”
Yawning, Layla swung her legs out of bed. Her shirt rode up, revealing a smooth strip of skin at her waist.
Shane’s cheeks flushed, and he quickly looked away, focusing intently on his task.
Padding over barefoot, Layla rested her chin on his shoulder from behind. “Is it ready?”
“There.” With a nod, he took her wrist and fastened a sleek alloy bracer around it.
It gleamed with a subtle, violet light, elegant enough to pass for jewelry.
A warm, grateful smile spread across Layla’s face. “You always think of everything.”
She leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
The simple gesture made Shane blush furiously again, but his eyes shone with unmistakable delight.
If he were a cat, his tail would be swishing happily.
With the bracer securely in place, Layla headed out.
After a quick breakfast, Carson shouldered the large pack of supplies, giving her a firm nod. “All
set.”
Shane and Liam saw them to the door.
Liam waved, his expression serious. “You get into any trouble, you call for backup, okay?”
Turning back, Layla grinned and waved both hands overhead. “Don’t worry! I can take care of
