Layla had survived through an apocalypse, and deep-seated human gature drew people toward strength.
Carson’s outburst blazed like a bright spark cutting through heavy darkness.
A faint smile tugged unconsciously at the corners of Layla’s mouth.
She stepped over to Carson and gave his sleeve a fight tug. “Don’t kill him. We still need answers from
aim.”
Carson eased the pressure of his boot but did not lift it off Arnold completely.
Arnold’s vile comment alone would have justified his death a thousand times over.
He drew breath only because Carson needed to squeeze information out of him about the energy field and he whereabouts of Oliver and George.
Carson crouched down and held Arnold pinned firmly beneath him.
ayla looked down at Arnold with a cool, knowing smile. “If you want to stay alive, lead us to the energy ield-or take us to Oliver, who is lost inside the miasma. You’ve survived out here for ages. You must know how to navigate the toxic fog and track people.”
Hatred burned in Arnold’s eyes.
He turned his head away, refusing to speak to Layla and Carson.
ayla straightened up and studied Arnold with obvious disappointment on her face.
Very well, if you refuse to cooperate,” she said flatly.
She pulled a small box out of her pack. Inside lay syringes filled with prepared serum.
Fear finally flickered across Arnold’s face as he stared at the box. “What’s in there? What are you planning
o do?”
Layla said nothing, still wearing her calm smile. She lifted one syringe and pressed the plunger to move
he liquid inside.
Surprise showed on Carson’s face.
Layla had brought along the Berserker Serum.
None of the rest of them had known she carried it.
Layla had her own reasons for tucking the Berserker Serum away.
No one could predict what dangers they would run into inside the miasma forest.
If a life-or-death crisis hit, she could inject herself with the serum.

Chapter 408 Would You Just Drop It?
Finished
It would boost her power temporarily, and she could get everyone traveling with her back to safety.
Carson only puzzled over this for a split second before he figured out Layla’s plan.
Disapproval settled in his gaze, and a flicker of anger crossed his features.
That anger was directed at himself.
Layla doubted their combined strength so badly that she felt she had to bring the Berserker Serum.
Layla adjusted the Berserker Serum syringe and moved it slowly toward Arnold’s neck.
Her tone carried a quiet, unmissable threat. “This shot will make you wish you were dead. Are you sure you won’t tell us the truth?”
Arnold caught a familiar scent, and his eyes blew wide. “That’s Berserker Serum.”
Curiosity filled Layla’s stare. She had not expected him to recognize it. “How do you know about Berserker Serum?”
Arnold let out a bitter laugh. “The royal family has been researching it.”
What? The royal family is researching this, too?
Shock hit both Layla and Carson, and they traded a quick look.
They both wondered whether Oliver knew about this secret project.
Layla leaned toward the belief that he did not.
Oliver was already sidelined and overlooked within the royal family.
News of such experiments would turn into a huge scandal if it got out.
So the royal family would keep this hidden from Oliver.
Besides, Oliver would have mentioned the Berserker Serum already if he had known anything about it.
Layla shook her head and looked straight at Arnold. “You know quite a few royal-family secrets. It’s surprising they let you live.”
Arnold’s eyes darted away. He clearly wanted to dodge that question.
Layla raised an eyebrow. “You are the one who raised and looked after Prince Oliver, aren’t you?”
Arnold’s composure finally cracked.
He turned his face aside, acting as if he no longer feared the Berserker Serum at all.
Arnold ground his teeth and spoke. “I never took care of him.”
