Sienna’s POV
Between us, a small silence now settled, but this time it felt like a bridge connecting us. He almost lifted his hand, almost touched me, but held back, as if giving me space to choose.
“I hope,” he paused, his gaze falling to my hand before rising back to my face, “you stay. Here. With us.”
My heart tightened. Soft, but deep. “I’ll stay,” I said, honesty pouring from that deepest place in me.
A smile formed on his face slow, but so sincere.
“Good,” he whispered. Only that, yet it was enough to warm me all the way through.
I leaned back into the sofa, letting the quiet atmosphere wrap around us. Noah was asleep, the house dim with warm yellow light, and beside me was Liam. Not cold, not distant anymore but someone who made this place and my heart feel alive again.
I was just about to walk toward the bedroom when a soft voice from behind me stopped my steps.
“Sienna.
”
That tone was so soft, but enough to quicken the beat of my heart. I turned. Liam stood a few steps away, still wearing his gray T-shirt and lounge pants, his face tiredyet composed in the silent light of the living room.
“What is it?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
He was silent a moment, as if weighing something in his mind. Then he stepped closer slow, deliberate, until only one step remained between us. I could smell his faint soap scent, fresh and somehow disarming.
“Tonight.” His tone came out soft, almost hesitant.”
Tonight can we sleep together?
I froze. My eyes lifted instantly, meeting his so sincere.
There was no teasing, no pressure-just a tenderness that left me speechless.
“W-what do you mean?” I asked, my voice shaking just slightly.
Liam took a deep breath. “I won’t overstep any boundaries, Sienna. I just.” He trailed off and then looked at me even softer.
” I just want to look at your face before I fall asleep.”
His words hit me gently but deep inside. I didn’t know why my chest felt tight. Five years of marriage back then, five years full of distance and silence–never once did we share a moment like this. But tonight, with one sentence, he touched the deepest part of me.
“Are you sure you won’t regret it?” I asked softly, half searching for a reason to refuse, half hoping he would say no.Liam smiled faintly and stepped a little closer to me unti. we were almost touching. “No, I just want to feel close.”
His voice was so honest, and in his eyes, I could feel a warmth that was real. Without pressure or hidden intentions, he had that simple desire to be with me.
Liam didn’t step closer, but it felt just the same, like the air between us contracted of its own accord, the room shifting into something softer, warmer, more. aware.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” he added, his voice low, almost a whisper, as if it was meant only for me.
“If you want distance, I’ll step back. But if you let me stay.”
“Relax,” he said suddenly, his voice low, yet reassuring.” I’ll just be here.
I turned my head, his eyes in the dim light were looking at me, so soft. And I knew then, I had no reason to be afraid. I lay down slowly beside him, keeping a respectful distance yet close enough to feel the warmth of someone’s presence next to me.
A few seconds of silence passed. The only sound was our breathing, soft and steady, adjusting to each other.
Liam shifted slightly, turning toward me. “I’ve wanted this for a very long time.”
I swallowed as my heartbeat stopped for a moment. “Like this?”
“Sleeping next to you,” he whispered, “without anger, without resentment. Just. peace.”
The word peace made my eyes sting. I stared at the ceiling, trying to hold back the sudden tears that threatened to fall. “Me too,” I finally whispered. “I want this too.”
Liam reached out slowly, touching the tip of my finger above the sheet. The touch was just about weightless, yet enough that it sent my whole body softly trembling. He didn’t pull my hand, he merely held it delicately, apromise not needing to be said aloud.
“Good night, Sienna,” he said quietly.
I leaned over to him now, my eyes on his quiet face. A soft smile arced my lips. “Good night, Liam.”
For the first time in years, I slept with a peaceful heart because the person beside me was no longer just a husband on paper but was slowly a home I had longed for.
