“Is that the friendship bracelet Olivia made for you the other day?”
Ethan Carter absentmindedly lifted his wrist a bit higher, his shirt sleeves rolled up so everyone could get a clear look.
He nodded, a little smile in his voice. “Yeah.”
Damian Franklin took one glance and grinned. “Man, Olivia’s got some serious skills.”
Lance Carter chimed in, echoing the compliment.
Beatty, who’d been listening to the steady stream of praise, stopped fidgeting and stared at the bracelet, eyes wide.
Damian nudged her. “Olivia made that for him.”
Beatty’s eyes lit up. “It’s really pretty! Olivia’s awesome.”
The compliments kept coming, one after another, but Ethan just stood there, looking as calm as ever—except his hand, the one with the bracelet, never dropped back down.
Adelina Lane watched him for a moment, thinking, If Ethan had a tail, it’d be wagging right now.
At that moment, Lily George, leaning on someone’s arm, made her way over.
She caught the lively conversation and asked, “What’s going on over here? You all sound like you’re having a party.”
Lance spoke up. “We’re talking about Ethan.”
Lily glanced at Ethan, not seeing anything out of the ordinary. “Ethan? What about him?”
“His bracelet!” Beatty blurted out before anyone else.
She pointed, and Lily’s eyes went to Ethan’s wrist. She stared for a moment, surprised. “When did Ethan start wearing these kinds of things?”
Ethan had never really been the friendship-bracelet type.
He simply said, “Olivia made it.”
Just four words, but somehow it sounded like he was bragging about it.
Adelina Lane watched him, and there was no doubt in her mind—he was showing off. She tried not to laugh.
It was rare to see him like this.
She kept it to herself, though.
Ethan got right to the point. “Did Dad ever tell you the whole story about the car accident?”
Lily looked confused but nodded. “He told me some drunk driver hit you, and that’s why it happened.”
“That’s not the full story.”
Lily’s frown deepened. “What do you mean?”
“I was actually rushing to the hospital that day. That’s why I was in the accident.”
“The hospital?” Lily’s eyes widened, worry written all over her face. “Why were you going to the hospital?”
She knew Olivia only went into labor after hearing about Ethan’s accident, so it couldn’t have been about Olivia.
It had to be Ethan’s own health.
Lily looked him up and down, her anxiety obvious.
Ethan glanced at Lance, who also looked concerned. Lance tried to reassure her, “Mom, don’t panic. Everything’s fine, see? Ethan’s standing here, safe and sound. It’s just that…well, there was a little scare that day.”
“What scare?” Lily pressed, her worry only growing.
