Chapter 426
“But it’s the truth!” I screamed. “Roman is my world. He’s everything.
I can’t live without him. I won’t.”
She stared at me like she didn’t recognize me anymore.
“I did this,” I whispered, curling inward. “This is my fault. I pushed
him. I forced him into this. I told him to end everything quickly. God,
I was so stupid.” I dragged a hand down my face. “I never should have
dropped the gun. Now his father is here, threatening everything, and
I don’t even know what to do anymore.”
“Wait,” Alyssa said slowly. “That man earlier… he’s really Roman’s
dad?”
“Yes.”
She nodded, understanding dawning. “That explains a lot. He looked
similar to Gerald-” She paused. “Ryan.”
My head snapped up. “Explains what? Alyssa, what do you mean? Is
something wrong with Roman?”
“No. Nothing went wrong-”

“Is he truly out of danger?” I demanded. “Is he dying?”
She took a deep breath and reached for my hand. “Savannah, I’m
going to hold your hand when I tell you this.”
Fear crawled up my spine.
“Why?” I whispered, pulling away. “What are you about to say?”
Her eyes glistened. “Roman is in a coma.”
The world stopped.
I stared at her, shaking my head slowly. “No. No, that’s not possible.
He can’t be in a coma.”
“Sav-”
“No!” I screamed. “Don’t tell me to calm down. You don’t understand
what this feels like.”
Her voice cracked. “I know I don’t. But I do know this–it could have
been worse.” She swallowed hard. “He lost a lot of blood and went
into shock, Sav. He flatlined twice during surgery. He almost died. His
father had to donate blood to save him.”

My chest caved in.
“If his father hadn’t been here…” she whispered, “we would be telling
a very different story right now.”
I broke. I cried until my chest hurt. Until my throat burned. Until
everything inside me felt hollow and raw.
“So what?” I sobbed. “What now? I’m supposed to be grateful that
he’s trapped between life and death?” My voice shook violently. “That
he’s basically a vegetable now? That nobody knows when–or if he’ll
wake up?”
She didn’t answer.
“Answer me!” I yelled.
“Savannah!” Alyssa shouted back, tears streaming down her face.
“Roman is strong. He’ll wake up. I believe that. He’s not going to
leave you and the baby alone.”
“When? When is he going to wake up?” I demanded. “When I’m nine
months pregnant? When our baby is born? When it’s learning to ride
a bike?” My chest heaved. “When exactly?”
“No one knows!” she cried. “No one. All we can do is pray.”

I collapsed back, sobbing quietly now. Exhausted. Empty. “I never
should have let that gun go. I never should have wrestled for it with
Julius,” I whispered.
The door opened then, and a nurse entered with a tray. We fell silent.
“I’m just going to collect your blood sample to run some further
tests.” She said,
I nodded, wiping my tears.
After she finished prepping my arm, I asked softly, “What about my
fiancé? I came in with him. Roman Blackwood?”
The nurse hesitated. Then she answered. “We’re preparing him for
transfer.”
My heart slammed painfully. “Transfer? What do you mean?”
