What a cruel twist of fate.

I reached for my phone and stood. I need to use the bathroom real quick,I told Roman softly, even though he couldn’t hear me. Even though he couldn’t answer.

I had just gotten used to talking to him like that.

I closed the door behind me and went straight to my room, did what I needed to do, and rushed through it like I was afraid something terrible would happen in the few minutes I was gone from him.

I didn’t even know why I hurried. But I just did.

And soon, I was back in the hallway, heading toward the room next door. Toward Roman.

But just as I reached the door, I noticed something strange. It was halfopen. And I’m sure as hell I closed it properly. That alone made

me slow down.

Normally, the nurses closed it. Just like me. Carefully. Always. So instead of walking straight in, I paused. Then I peeped through the

crack.

And what I saw made the hairs on the back of my neck rise.

Someone was standing by Roman’s bedside. Dressed in scrubs. A black mask covered his mouth and nose. And he was hunched over

Roman, holding a syringe and injecting something into his body.

My breath caught.

Even though the nurses often gave Roman injections, they almost always did it in my presence. Always explained what it was before I

even asked. Always spoke.

And they never wore black masks.

This person hadn’t said a word. And something about him in that mask screamed wrong.

Even the way he moved. Too hurried. Too stiff. Too notlikeanurse.

My first instinct was to burst into the room and confront him. Demand to know what he was injecting into my fiancé. Demand to see his

  1. ID. Demand answers.

But I stopped myself.

If there was one thing I had learned recently, it was diplomacy and caution.

So instead, with shaking hands, I pulled out my phone. Then carefully and silently took a picture. I zoomed in on the syringe. On the liquid inside. On his gloved hand. All while praying and begging that it wasn’t poison. That it wasn’t something meant to finish what the

gun had started.

I took multiple pictures of him. Of the injection. Of the vial.

The moment he finished, he stuffed the used syringe and injection into the pocket of his scrubs and turned toward the door.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Quickly, I hid my phone and stepped back, pretending I had just arrived.

I took a second to compose myself. Smoothed my expression and steadied my breathing. Then I walked forward casually.

He was in a hurry, already ripping off his mask as he moved, and he wasn’t watching where he was going. So he ended up bumping

straight into me.

Woah!I gasped, stumbling back slightly. Watch it, nurse.I forced a small, nervous laugh to further play the part well.

But the moment I looked up to see his facemy blood froze and time seemed to stop.

The hallway blurred.

Standing in front of me was a face I recognized. A face I had been looking for. A face that I never expected to be here.

His eyes widened in shock. And for a split second, we just stared at each other.

Recognition. Panic. Fear.

Then he recovered quickly. Too quickly. He yanked the mask back over his face and took off, practically running. Sprinting down the

hallway.

Hey!I called instinctively, but my voice came out weak. I stood there, rooted to the spot, heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my

ears.

That was him. There was no mistake. The same man. The same guard. The one who had disappeared in New Hope. The one who had vanished without a trace. The one no one could findAnd he had just injected something into Roman.

A cold, terrifying realization settled in my chest.

This wasn’t an accident. This wasn’t random. This was intentional.
