Chapter 462

Chapter 261: It Was Medicine

Savannah

The waiting was the worst part.

Not the fear. Not the uncertainty. Not even the possibility that

everything could go wrong in a single moment.

It was the waiting.

The waiting was that kind that stretched time until every second felt

too long and even too cruel. The kind that forced you to sit inside

your own thoughts with nowhere to run.

Reese had left hours ago with the blood sample, insisting he was the

fastest driver in the manor and that he was the only one we could

trust with something this sensitive. We couldn’t let the General know.

Not yet. Because if Reginald found out, he wouldn’t send the blood to

a doctor.

He’d send it to himself.

And whatever was happening to Roman would disappear into a locked

drawer, buried under loyalty and silence. So that’s why Reese went

alone. And I stayed.

There was nothing else to do but sit. And think. And fear. And hope.

The hours blurred together until I lost track of time. I didn’t leave

Roman’s side. Not even once. Not to eat. Not to sleep. Not even to

wash my face.

I sat on the same chair, my fingers wrapped around the armrest, my

eyes fixed on him like if I looked away, even for a second, something

terrible would happen. And I watched his chest rise and fall.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Inhale.

Exhale.

I practically counted every breath. I listened to the steady,

mechanical beep of the heart monitor and convinced myself that if

the sound changed even slightly, I would know.

I watched his fingers. His lashes. The faint line between his brows. I

waited for a twitch. A sigh. Anything.

But there was nothing.

Roman lay exactly as he had for a week.

At some point, the tears started without my permission. They were

silent at first, then hot and relentless as they slid down my cheeks

and dripped onto my hands.

I pinched my own arm hard, just to feel something real.

This can’t be our life now. This can’t be how it ends.

The door opening startled me so badly I almost jumped out of my chair. River walked in holding two small bags of chips and the

normalcy of it nearly broke me.

I wiped my face quickly and forced myself upright. Hey.

She smiled softly. Someone summoned me to come keep you

company.

Of course he did. Reese knew that my mind would turn into a

battlefield from anxiety and fear.

I wonder who that might be,I murmured.

She pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat beside me. “Want some?

she asked, offering me one of the bags.

I shook my head. No, thanks.

She hesitated, then tried again gently. Just a little. Please. Don’t

starve yourself, Savannah. I noticed you’ve not been eating well.

I let out a short, bitter laugh.

What exactly do you expect me to do right now?I asked. Stuff my

face with a bag of chips? Tell jokes? Laugh? Pretend everything is

fine? Go on with my life like someone didn’t just inject something
