River sighed. “Roman-”

“Now,” I snapped.

The sharp pain that followed was immediate and vicious, shooting

through my chest like punishment for raising my voice. I gritted my

teeth, refusing to let it show.

Slowly, reluctantly, they began to file out.

River lingered at the door, looking back at me with something like

sadness. Like regret. I looked away.

Reese quietly turned to follow them.

“Not you.”

He paused. “You could’ve specified that, you know.”

I scowled. “Was I supposed to say, everyone but Reese and Savannah

out?”

“Yes,” he shrugged. “Communication is important.”

“Sit down,” I muttered. “Please.”

He did.

I turned my attention fully to him. “Since Savannah won’t say

anything, I trust you to tell me why she stiffened when Randall

spoke.”

Reese didn’t hesitate. “He’s been watching you.”

I frowned. “Watching me how?”

Before he could answer, Savannah spoke. “Roman… that guard back in

Italy. The one in New Hope.”

My stomach dropped. “Ezra?”

She nodded. “He was injecting you with sedatives. Keeping you in a

coma. He almost left you brain–dead.”

My ears rang.

“There was a camera in this room,” she continued, voice shaking.

“Randall watched everything. He knew. He never said a word. Not

until I walked in on Ezra doing it.”

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” I said slowly. “Why would he–why

would any of them-‘

“Father,” Reese said coldly. “Father was behind it. Randall monitored

the cameras. Ezra did the work. Meanwhile, he kept Savannah here.

Nearly forced her to have her medical appointments under his roof.”

My blood went cold.

“He wants to hurt the baby,” Reese finished.

Something inside me snapped.

I turned to Savannah, fury blazing through every nerve. “Why did you

come here?”

She blinked. “What?”

“I asked you a question,” I snapped. “Why are you here? We talked about this. Over and over. You wanted to come here then–I said no, I was clear. Under no circumstances were you supposed to set foot in this place!”

She stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

“Your life was on the line!” she shouted. “Your father showed up at

the hospital and threatened to wipe out my entire family! You nearly

died! I passed out! He donated blood to save you and arranged your

transfer here while I was unconscious! What the hell was I supposed

to do in that state?!”

“Anything!” I roared. “Anything but walk into the lion’s den wide-

eyed!”

Reese muttered, “Oh boy. Here we go again.”

She scoffed, pacing now, hands in her hair. “I can’t believe we’re

having this argument.”

“Oh, you should believe it,” I said.

She spun on me. “What is wrong with you?!”

“What is wrong with you?” I shot back. “Do you have any idea how badly this could’ve gone? You’re pregnant. This house has buried women in your condition. Dahlia died-”

“Stop!” she screamed, clapping her hands over her ears. “I don’t care!

I don’t care about her! I don’t want to hear about that woman anymore! I’m sick of hearing her name! We do not have the same

fate! Stop comparing me to her!”

She was shaking now. Crying. Furious.

past year,” she continued. “Because of you. I’ve been humiliated.
