Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Mr. Montgomery froze, the color draining completely from his face.
He stormed out of Sterling Corporation headquarters, dazed and hollow.
All the rage and fear he’d been bottling up finally erupted.
He rushed home to find Alexander pacing anxiously.
Look at what you’ve done!”
He exploded, no longer trying to keep the dignity of the family head.
For that Chloe woman, ruining yourself wasn’t enough–you had to drag the whole Montgomery family down too!”
Alexander’s face went pale under his father’s fury. “Dad… you used to support me… you even said if we won-
‘Support you?” Mr. Montgomery barked, jabbing a finger at his nose. “You thought Eleanor would just keep giving in because she loved you? That faking suicide and crying would make her cave? Congrats, kid–she’s playing for keeps now, and the Montgomery family is finished. Happy? How much is your precious love
worth now?”
Alexander trembled, looking desperately at Chloe for backup.
she avoided his gaze, her voice low: “Uncle… don’t panic. The most important thing is to figure out how-
How? There’s nothing left to figure out!”
Mr. Montgomery whipped his anger toward her.
If you hadn’t been manipulating Alexander, we wouldn’t be here! Get out- -get the hell out of my house!”
Chloe went pale, saying nothing, frozen in place.
Alexander watched–the unprecedented viciousness of his father, Chloe’s retreat–and felt his heart sink into an icy pit.

Alexander shouted. “This is all your fault! If you hadn’t thrown yourself at me like some homewrecker, maybe Eleanor would still care about me. Would I be in
this mess?!”
Chloe finally snapped. “You’re the greedy one! Couldn’t let go of the Sterling family power but wanted to boost your ego with me. And now when everything blows up, you blame me?”
Life didn’t cut them any slack.
Evidence of Chloe’s early academic misconduct was anonymously submitted–solid proof that triggered an immediate investigation. Her career was over, and she could even face legal trouble.
Chloe broke down completely, locking herself in her room.
Her eyes red and swollen, she screamed at Alexander: “It’s her! It has to be Eleanor! She wants to destroy us completely!”
Alexander looked at this possessed woman, then at their empty apartment. All he felt was disgust–endless, suffocating disgust.
Finally, he saw clearly: everything he’d risked, everything he’d gambled on, it was all just an illusion.
