:
“Is the damage assessment finished? You’re reporting to the shareholders at ten.”
Hudson tossed the folder across the desk.
“It’s done.”
Bert glared at him, his voice thick with irritation.
“What the hell is that tone?”
Hudson went to speak, but the suppressed cough clawed its way back up.
Cough-
Hack, hack-
Bert knit his brows, then suddenly-Splatter.

Hudson vomited blood directly onto the desk, dark red spots and clots soaking the documents.
Kevin, who had just entered, went pale with panic.
“Sir! Sir!”
He called for an ambulance immediately, and a dazed Hudson was rushed to the hospital.
In the ward, Hudson gradually regained consciousness; he lay against the pillows, eyes closed.
Outside, the muffled sound of Bert and Emily arguing filtered through the door.
“The tests aren’t even back, but anyone can see he’s suffering from extreme exhaustion! Bert, he’s your son, not a machine! Is the firm really more important than your own blood?”
“I told him to see a doctor weeks ago, but he’s the one who insisted on stalling! Shareholders are already livid over the KOE disaster. Now he’s missing the assessment report-how am I supposed to explain this to the board?”
“The board, the firm? Is that all you care about? You should just move into the office and marry the company!”

“A woman who does nothing but spend my money has no right to lecture me. Stay out of my business!”
Creak- The door opened, and both parents looked over to see a stone-faced Hudson standing there.
Hudson spoke flatly, “It’s too stuffy in here. I’m going out for some air.”
The click of high heels followed him down the hall as Emily caught up.
“Hudson, you know your father’s temper. Just go back and apologize. Let’s make this go away.”
Hudson closed his eyes, then turned to face his mother.
“I worked myself into a hospital bed for that company. I’ve done nothing wrong, and I have nothing to apologize for. I’ve never failed him.”
Emily’s brow deepened. “Why are you being so stubborn? What do you gain by defying him?”
Hudson let out a low cough, his lips pale as he took a shallow breath.
“Mom, you always do this. Even when I’m right, you tell me to bow to his anger. My entire life has been dictated by his whims; I’ve never had a choice.
“Even now, while I’m coughing up blood, neither of you has asked how I feel. You’re just picking apart each other’s failures, using me as a scorecard for your own war. Don’t you ever get tired of it?”
Emily’s face went stiff, her lips parting, but not a single word of comfort came out.
Hudson gave her one long, hollow look and turned to walk away.
He took the elevator to the lobby, where he suddenly spotted Silas Faith and Cortney.
He knit his brows, sensing a shift in the air, and followed them to the fifth floor.
He watched them enter a lab and looked up at the sign on the door. It read, “DNA PATERNITY TESTING.”
The Merchant Villa.
Michael Merchant woke on the living room sofa, smelling of stale bourbon and a heavy hangover.
He tried to piece together the events in the private dining room, but his brain was a void.
