“You aren’t dead yet. As long as you hold that title, you work until the job is done. Even if you’re on your deathbed, you settle the firm’s business first.”
Hudson knew Bert’s bottom line was the firm, but hearing it out loud still made his blood run cold. He looked at Emily.
His mother did what she always did-she looked away, ignoring the cruelty of his father’s words.
He understood then that he had never been a son to them.
He was an asset. A tool to be used until he broke.

They lived in the same house, but there was no love, only a mountain of silent, burning
resentment.
He’d lived his whole life in this desert. Where would he even learn how to love?
Everything he told Jade was the absolute truth-he had no teacher for the heart.
Bert wasn’t interested in his silence. He gave a final command.
“I’ll arrange the meeting with Andrea. You do your job. I’ll handle the rest.”
Bert marched out, followed quickly by Emily.
Hudson watched them leave, standing perfectly still in the quiet ward.
Maybe he had been chasing the wrong ghost his entire life…
3:30 PM arrived.
Hudson was in the lobby, waiting for Silas Faith.
Minutes passed, and Silas still hadn’t appeared.
Was he playing some kind of mind game?

But Hudson had seen Silas take the girl into the lab. Silas wasn’t the type to joke about family blood.
He knit his brows and walked out to the hospital entrance, scanning the street.
Suddenly, he saw Silas and Cortney across the road.
Silas was on his phone. Cortney saw Hudson and began to jump and wave with excitement.
Hudson offered a small smile. The little girl suddenly bolted into the crosswalk toward him.
At the same second, the scream of a horn shattered the air.
Beep-beep-beep-
A man’s voice roared from a passing truck.
“Watch out!”
“Whose kid is that?!”
“Stop! Stop the car!”
“Cortney!”
Hudson’s pupils contracted. The girl was frozen in the middle of the road, her face white with terror as she began to sob.
“Uncle Hudson! Help me! Uncle Hudson!”
In a split second, Hudson sprinted into the street. He dove, his body wrapping around the girl as they tumbled across the asphalt.
Crash-
A massive impact sent Hudson flying through the air. He landed hard, his body shielding Cortney from the hit.
He was in a world of agony. He forced his eyes open to check the girl. She was shaken, but unhurt. A shadow fell over him. Silas was standing there, his expression a complex mask of shock and pity.
Then, the sound of an elderly man’s voice roared from Silas’s phone on speaker.
“What did you say? The DNA results show she has zero connection to the Faith line?

Hudson heard the words through a haze of pain. His gaze dropped to the report in Silas’s hand.
The black letters on the white page were a death sentence for his illusions.
“Cortney Faith / Silas Faith: NO BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP FOUND.”
