Chapter 228 The Conspiracy

He kept his voice low, but there was no masking the thrill running through it.

Still, this was entirely new territory for him-a mix of fear and exhilaration that left him careless. He didn’t even think to double- check whether his targets were fully unconscious.

That one moment of oversight was all Riley needed.

Just as Devin turned toward the door, ready to head downstairs and meet his guest, Riley’s curled fingers found the switch on her

stun device.

A sharp, jolting current shot up from her wrist, raced through the nerves in her arm, and struck her brain like a bolt.

The numbness was beyond description.

Riley’s body jerked violently from the shock. Her head, which had been resting against the table, lifted slightly before dropping back down with a soft thud.

Luckily, Devin’s footsteps were already fading toward the stairwell-he hadn’t noticed a thing.

After the burst of pain came a short, strained clarity.

The dizziness lingered, but at least her thoughts began to clear.

Fighting through the weakness in her limbs, Riley immediately grabbed her phone and dialed 911.

But that alone wouldn’t be enough.

Holding onto the edge of the table, Riley pushed herself up, swaying unsteadily.

The room spun with every move. Her legs felt like walking on foam as she staggered toward the doorway and called out,

“Harvey!”

At the entrance, Harvey turned at the sound of her voice.

Riley’s heart, lodged in her throat, loosened just a little.

“Ms. Harper?” Harvey took in her pale face and unsteady stance, then put on a perfectly timed look of surprise and concern. “What’s wrong? Where is everyone? Is dinner over already?”

The questions came rapid-fire, overwhelming Riley’s already foggy mind.

She didn’t have the focus to register how strangely calm Harvey sounded. She just pressed a hand to her temple and struggled

closer to him.

“Quick… we need to go… get help,” she managed, breathless. “The dinner… something’s not right…”

“Something’s wrong?” Harvey’s frown deepened.

He stepped toward her, voice laced with feigned worry. “What happened? Where’s Devin?”

But just as Riley leaned into him, placing all her hope in his hands, Harvey’s other arm moved quietly behind her back.

His eyes turned cold and unfamiliar in an instant.

Riley was about to say the word sedatives when a sharp, precise strike landed at the base of her neck.

The brutal karate chop hit its mark.

“Ugh…”

A muffled groan escaped her lips before everything went dark.

In the last flicker of consciousness before she slipped under, one icy thought flashed through her mind.

Oh, no.

She’d been so careful with Devin… she’d even shocked herself awake with the stun device…

Unconscious, Riley was carried back into the private room and dumped roughly onto the long leather couch.

Soon after, sharp clicks of high heels echoed from the entrance.

“Where is she?”

Sophia’s voice was sweetly polished, but it carried a venomous chill.

“Right here,” Harvey said, nodding toward Riley on the couch.

“Well done.” A low, pleased laugh escaped Sophia.

Then she stepped inside.

She dug her sharp manicured nails into Riley’s chin, forcing her face upward.

Sophia looked down, her eyes openly filled with jealousy and spite.

Noticing the drug-induced flush slowly spreading across Riley’s cheeks, Sophia’s smile grew more satisfied.

To be sure Riley was truly out, she squeezed harder, letting her nails bite into the soft skin.

Riley didn’t stir. No reaction at all.

Content, Sophia released her grip and let out a light laugh that hung in the quiet room.

“Riley… You thought you were so clever? Look at you now-completely helpless.”

Devin wore a wide, ingratiating smile, though unease flickered behind his eyes. “Ms. Myers, are you sure… if we let my son have her, she won’t come after us later? I heard she’s married-and her husband’s supposed to have connections.**

“Married?” Sophia scoffed. “Mr. Hardy, don’t be naive. That marriage is nothing but a show. They never even filed the paperwork.

“Don’t worry. Once she’s been with your son, and we have plenty of photos and videos… you think someone with her reputation in Havenbrook would want this going public? Or do you think she’ll just… play along?”
