Chapter 338 Plane Ticket
She couldn’t tell whether he had truly surrendered or was just biding his time to make a move.
“Lucas…” she ventured cautiously once more, “you’re not going to lie to me again, are you?”
Lucas‘ brow tightened almost imperceptibly.

He stopped walking and turned back to look at her, his tone turning even colder. “No. Didn’t you say it yourself? This is all for the child’s sake.”
He threw the question back at her with a hint of sarcasm, then let his gaze sweep the room. “Besides, with everyone watching like this, what exactly could I do to you?”
A chill ran through Sophia under the weight of his intense stare.
Even though she’d gotten the answer she wanted, the unease in her chest didn’t fully settle.
She asked the question that mattered most. “What about Riley, then? How are you going to convince her?”
She was desperate to know how Lucas would handle the woman standing in their way.
Lucas felt a wave of disgust and didn’t even want to say Riley’s name in front of Sophia.
“That’s not your concern,” he replied coldly before walking out of the room.
Stepping into the hallway, the cool air did nothing to calm his nerves.
Expression blank, he pulled out his phone and called his assistant.
“Book me a round–the–world ticket, departing three days from now.”
Back in the villa’s living room, Riley’s anxiety hadn’t yet faded when the sound of a car pulling up suddenly cut through the quiet,, stopping right at the entrance.
Her heart sank.
“Someone’s here,” she said softly.
Sebastian’s eyes shifted toward the window.
Then, the sharp ring of the doorbell broke the silence inside.
Riley moved to the door and peered through the peephole.
Seeing Lucas‘ familiar–and detested–face outside, her eyes turned to ice.
How did he find this place?
There was no time to overthink it. She turned quickly.
“It’s Lucas,” she whispered. “Hide in my room.”

Without a word, Sebastian gave a slight nod and slipped silently down the second–floor hallway, disappearing from view.
Riley took a deep breath smoothing any emotion from her expression and putting just the right amount of distance in her demeanor.
She slowly opened the front door and looked at the man she’d shared so much history with, her tone flat. “How did you find this place?”
Lucas met her eyes directly, his voice low. “There are some things I needed to say to you in person.”
With that, he stepped straight into the living room.
But as soon as he entered, the faint scent of antiseptic caught his attention.
He frowned, sensitive to the smell, and his eyes drifted to the nearby trash can.
nside were several blood–stained gauze pads.
His gaze returned to Riley, his question direct. “Were you hurt?”
Riley’s eyes flickered slightly, a cold laugh echoing inside her.
She lowered her gaze and replied evenly, “Not me. Someone came after me earlier. One of the staff got cut protecting me. I just
elped patch them up.”
Just as she’d hoped, Lucas‘ focus shifted.
‘This is one of the most secure properties in all of Havenbrook. How did anyone get in here to attack you?”
Riley offered a bitter smile, ice lingering in her eyes.
‘You’d have to ask Sophia about that. How is it that her fans have such reach–they found out where I live and managed to slip in to pull something like this?”
‘Sophia’s fans?” Lucas nearly raised his voice. “Her fans tracked you here?”
He clearly hadn’t expected that answer. His face stiffened.
Riley turned, crossed her arms, and looked at him coldly. “It’s all over the news. It’s a mess. Are you telling me you haven’t seen any of it?”
Lucas‘ expression shifted uncomfortably.
He paused for a few seconds before finally admitting, “Riley, I saw it.
‘But… my grandfather took another turn and had to be hospitalized. I haven’t had a chance to deal with any of it yet.”
Riley felt nothing inside.
More out of courtesy than care, she asked, “How is he doing now?”
A look of defeat flashed across Lucas‘ face, one he couldn’t hide.
He sighed. “Not well at all… so…”

He hesitated, as if struggling to get the words out.

Seeing him falter, Riley’s tone hardened. “You came all this way. I doubt it’s just to chat. If you have something to say, say it.”
Pushed like that, Lucas took a deep breath and looked away from her assessing gaze. “I’m sorry, Riley.
“That proposal I promised you../it’s not going to happen.”
Riley’s heart didn’t so much as flutter. She simply watched him quietly, waiting for the excuse to unfold.
“You’ve seen how things are. The Ashfords are in a rough spot right now. I’m still keeping my grandfather’s condition out of the press. And Sophia… she’s threatening to go nuclear, ready to blow everything up at any moment.
‘If we move forward with the proposal now, it’ll just add fuel to the fire. It won’t help the family’s reputation or the company’s stability. So… I need you to just hang tight for a while.”
