The remark froze the smile on Raymond’s face, stirring an unexpected wave of irritation inside him.

His own sister was finally coming/home–was he not even allowed to feel excited in his own house?

Back when they still believed Riley was gone for good, he had watched Melissa pour all her attention on Elsie and simply assumed she was redirecting her grief over losing her biological daughter toward her adopted one. It made sense at the time.

Raymond couldn’t hold back any longer. He frowned and spoke up plainly, “Mom, what’s that supposed to mean? Riley’s family. She’s coming home, and we’re all supposed to be together again. Why do you sound so… unhappy about it?

“Do you want everyone walking around with long faces so Riley feels uneasy the moment she steps in? How do you think that’ll make her feel?”

Melissa’s expression tightened briefly, leaving her at a loss for words.

Noticing the tension, Elsie quickly stepped in to smooth things over. She rose to her feet, voice trembling slightly, “Raymond, please don’t blame Mom. It’s my fault–I’m the one who brought the mood down on what should be a happy day. You really don’t have to worry about my feelings.”

Her show of self–sacrifice only made Melissa feel more protective of her.

Catching the rising strain, Zavier shot Raymond a warning glance and murmured under his breath for him to let it go–if Melissa really lost her temper, nobody would come out looking good.

Raymond opened his mouth, then closed it again. Seeing how clearly his mother was siding with Elsie, he swallowed the words he wanted to say.

“I’m gonna call Riley and check what time she’ll get here,” he muttered before turning and heading straight upstairs.

But once upstairs with the door closed, it suddenly struck him…

On the phone, Riley had mentioned she was with Sebastian.

So not only was his sister coming home today–Sebastian Torres, the well–known heir to the Torres family and her future husband, was joining too?

Raymond raised a brow, then thought back to his mother’s attitude downstairs.

Whatever. The way she was acting now, if he went down and announced it, who knew what kind of scene might follow.

He’d just let Sebastian’s arrival speak for itself.

That afternoon, Sebastian’s car eased into the upscale gated community where the Harpers lived.

By the time the vehicle came to a stop at the front gate, Zavier and Raymond had already been waiting outside, watching for a while.

Tall and poised, he carried an air of quiet elegance and natural authority. The moment he appeared, his presence seemed to shift the atmosphere around him, lending a certain weight to the air.

Zavier hadn’t expected him. Seeing the heir to the Torres family–a name known throughout the city–he froze for an instant, uncertain how to respond.

But Sebastian was already closing the distance with a few relaxed strides. He offered a slight, polite nod, respectful yet entirely self- assured. “Mr. Harper, it’s good to meet you. I’m Sebastian.”

Without pausing, he turned back to the car, opened the passenger door himself, and gently placed a hand along the roof to help Riley step out safely.

The moment Riley appeared, Zavier’s gaze locked onto her and didn’t waver.

He moved toward her quickly, eyes filled with concern. “Riley, what happened? It hasn’t been that long, but you look so much thinner than the last time I saw you. Did something go wrong while you were in Havenbrook?”

Looking at the face so similar to her own, now etched with genuine worry, Riley felt a soft warmth in her chest. She shook her head and offered a light, reassuring smile. “No, nothing like that. I’ve just had a lot on my plate lately with work. I’m perfectly fine.”

Raymond chimed in right away, his tone full of brotherly affection. “You can’t let work run you down like that! What matters is you’re home now. Stay awhile and really rest up–I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”

Then he eagerly ushered them both toward the house.

Meanwhile, Sebastian signaled to his assistant, who immediately directed a few men to begin carrying an assortment of beautifully wrapped gifts from the trunk into the house.

The whole scene looked less like a casual first visit and more like the beginnings of a formal proposal.

nside, Melissa and Elsie had also heard the commotion out front. After learning from one of the staff that Sebastian had arrived, they hurried out to greet the guests.

Melissa put on a warm, sociable smile, her eyes going straight to Sebastian first. “Oh my, Sebastian, what a lovely surprise! You should have told us you were coming–we would have been better prepared.”

Then, almost as an afterthought, she finally glanced toward Riley, offering a half–hearted, chastising took. Her tone wasn’t exactly warm–it carried a slight edge of reproach. “You really should have given us some notice, dear. Bringing over such an important guest without warning… what if we don’t make a good impression? Sebastian might think we Harpers don’t know how to host properly.”

On the surface, it sounded thoughtful. Underneath, though, it felt like she was already setting Riley up to take the blame if anything went less than perfectly.
