Then, I will go get her myself. Bring her back. Make her the real Mrs. Ashford again–no more pain, no more humiliation.
“Fine, fine. Mr. Busy Pants,” Tyrone mumbled on the other end. Then, like something just hit him, his tone shifted–a little strange. “Oh, hey, wait. Don’t hang up yet. Let me ask you something. You heard about that huge thing going on with Nexopolis and the Harper family?”
Lucas frowned slightly. “The Harper family?”
Tyrone said, “Yeah, exactly. I heard they just found a daughter they lost years ago. A real heiress. And the minute she showed up, she got no less than five percent of the Harper family’s original shares.”
He paused for a second, his voice turning a little tentative. “Ms. Harper is also a Harper… Riley, right? So I was thinking–what are the odds…”
“No,” Lucas cut him off before he could finish. “Riley’s overseas right now. I know exactly what her background is.”
He let out a cold snort.
If Riley really had some powerful family like the Harper family in the Nexopolis behind her, why would she have put up with all the crap from Sophia?
And come on–a family like the Harper family? They’d never let their own daughter go through some fake marriage with me.
Tyrone heard how intense Lucas got and quickly tried to smooth things over. “Alright, alright. I was just asking. I didn’t really think so either. If Riley had connections that strong, when all that stuff went down with you and Sophia, the Harper family probably would’ve torn the Ashford family apart. No way they’d have let you walk away so clean.”
The call ended. The office fell quiet again.
But Lucas felt a heavy weight settle in his heart, and the uneasy feeling lingered on.
He pressed his lips together. Finally, he hit the intercom button. “Have Tanner Huff send me Riley’s journey and photos from the past two days. Now.”
Less than five minutes later, his phone pinged.
A slightly blurry photo appeared on the screen.
It showed the back of a woman with a slender figure.

She wore a light–colored trench coat and stood in a small town square. In the distance, there was a Gothic clock tower.
The woman in the photo did look thinner. That familiar back–the one that always carried a hint of stubbornness–made Lucas
tense heart settle back down.
“A Harper family heiress? No way,” he murmured.
Lucas tapped the screen lightly over the thin figure’s back. The corner of his mouth curled up in a self–mocking smile.
The unease faded. Lucas flipped his phone face down on the desk and dove back into the mess of reports.

In his mind, that whole long–lost heiress story Tyrone had brought up was just gossip and nonsense.

What he didn’t know was that the woman in the photo was just a decoy–someone Sebastian had found specifically to throw him off.
in Havenbrook, the rain kept falling harder.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away by the lake, the real Riley leaned against Sebastian’s shoulder. She pointed at the mountains in the distance, her smile bright and free.
Two lives were drifting further apart by the minute, all because of one giant gap in information.
A whole week went by in the blink of an eye.
When Riley met Brandon again at the local restaurant they’d agreed on, she almost didn’t recognize him.
The Brandon she knew–always dressed perfectly, every move oozing style–was now slumped in a wooden chair. His skin had tanned several shades darker. Hair that used to be slicked down just so now looked kind of messy.
Riley had barely sat down before she burst out laughing.
She raised her cup of coffee to hide her smile, her eyes curving as she looked him over. “Mr. Edwards–the sun in Lunbrook is… a lot harsher than in Havenbrook, huh?”
Brandon heard her voice and slowly lifted his head. He gave her a miserable, accusing look. “Riley, are you sure you got me a tour guide and not a Special Forces trainer?”
He held up his slightly roughened palm like he was presenting evidence. “Seven whole days. Day one–he took me on a hike through a virgin forest. Said he wanted me to ‘experience nature’s original breath.‘ Day two–he made me climb some nine- thousand–foot mountain. Said it was to ‘look down upon the world.‘ Day three… he took me river tracing. I’m not built for this. My calves are still shaking. I rested for two days, and I still haven’t recovered.”
Riley was struggling not to laugh. She managed to give him a teasing, almost envious look. “Wow, that’s actually pretty packed? Sounds amazing, honestly. I’m almost jealous. If I’d known the guide was that dedicated, I would’ve dropped my projects and taken your spot. Too bad–right before we left, I just finalized that project proposal. My whole vacation went down the drain, stuck at the hotel.”
As she spoke, she casually took the glass of warm water Sebastian handed her–the movement familiar and smooth.
Brandon glanced at Sebastian, who was sitting next to Riley, looking well–rested and glowing with good health. He knew exactly what was going on.
Project proposal, my ass.
These two probably spent the whole week tucked away in some paradise getting cozy, while I was out there getting tortured by that hyperactive lunatic Vaughn.
