She stood up and pulled Riley into a warm, solid hug–Riley still looking completely confused.

Miranda said, “Silly girl–why would I be mad at you? You two are young and in love. You should go out and see the world together. Work never ends, but a relationship needs care and attention.”
Riley was completely lost.
Sebastian, on the other hand, just pressed a hand to his forehead like he had a headache.
As expected.
He looked over at Wayne, who had been sitting there steadily the whole time. “Syou two came att the way here for this?”
Wayne’s features were about seventy percent similar to Sebastian’s. He rarely smiled. Even though time had carved lines around his eyes, he still carried that calm, sharp presence.
He said in a serious tone, “Your mother wanted to give you two a surprise.”
Wayne said it like he was announcing a ten–billion–dollar investment deal–not just playing along with Miranda’s little role–playing
game.
Riley finally pulled herself out of Miranda’s arms, her cheeks a little pink. She turned to Wayne and gave him a polite, slightly bowing greeting. “Hello, Wayne. About the trip… I’m really sorry. I didn’t know you and Miranda were here, so I didn’t prepare anything…”
Wayne shook his head. “No matter.”
Riley tugged at Sebastian’s sleeve. “But, we did get you both gifts when we were in Lunbrook.”
Sebastian got the hint. He crouched down and opened one of the suitcases.
Riley carefully pulled out two delicate velvet boxes and handed one to each of them.
She said, “We found these in an old shop in the ancient part of town. Just a Întle something–hope you like them.”
Miranda opened her box with delight. Inside was a cornucopia–beautifully carved, smooth, and warm to the touch.
Wayne’s box held a decorative piece symbolizing longevity.
The soft living room light fell on the polished ornaments.
Miranda couldn’t stop running her fingers over the cornucopia. The laugh lines around her eyes deepened–real joy.
“Riley is so thoughtful.” She placed it in the most visible spot on the coffee table, then turned to look at Riley with genuine affection. “It’s sweet of you–running around having fun and still thinking of us old folks.”
Wayne didn’t say anything, but he slowly put his ornament back in the box, handling it with care.
The mood in the room was warm. And that’s when Miranda’s curiosity got the better of her.
She scooted closer to Riley and lowered her voice. “Riley, be honest with me—you two went away together… how far have things

gene?”
As she spoke, her eyes kept darting back and forth between Riley and Sebastian, hex meaning crystal clear.
Riley’s face heated up.
Thinking that they had gotten married, she pressed her lips together, about to come clean, when Sebastian’s calm voice came from beside her.
He said, “Mom, aren’t you a little old for this kind of gossip? Is this really appropriate?”
Sebastian leaned back lazily on the couch, speaking slowly–and effectively shutting Miranda down.
“You little brat.” Miranda shot him an angry glare.
Wayne cleared his throat at just the right moment, cutting off the usual mother–son bickering. “Alright. Let the kids figure it out themselves. Stop worrying so much.”
“Fine, I’m being too pushy.” Miranda patted her forehead as she’d just remembered something important. Her smile faded a little, and she changed the subject. “Oh, by the way, while you were away, Wayne and I went to have dinner with your parents. I figured since both families are on the same page, we could start talking about the engagement party.”
“But…” Miranda’s expression turned strange. She frowned a little, like she was choosing her words carefully. “Things got a little… complicated. The conversation didn’t go smoothly. Now that you’re back, why don’t you go talk to your parents and figure out when we can all officially meet again?”
Her face had that look–like she’d seen something at that dinner she still didn’t quite know how to describe.
Riley nodded obediently. “Okay. I’ll go home in a couple of days and see what Dad thinks.”
Her face stayed calm, but inside, she knew exactly what was going/on.
My father and Raymond–both of them are sharp businessmen. They wouldn’t mess up an alliance with the Torres family.
The only people who could have made Miranda pull a face like that are my birth mother, who still hasn’t fully accepted her, and the adopted daughter who always stirs up trouble.
Miranda and Wayne stayed for a bit longer, then got up to leave.
Before heading out, Miranda made sure to give Sebastian one last instruction. “Tomorrow night, bring Riley to the Torres Mansion for dinner. The relatives all want to meet her. And control your temper–don’t stand there with that cold face of yours.”
