A few stragglers who hadn’tblocked her yet sent messages that appeared concerned but carried a sharp edge. “Elsie, did something happen between you and Riley? Why would Mr. Harper say something like that at the banquet?”

Elsie replied with practiced vulnerability, “I don’t know… maybe she resents me… resents me for having taken her place all th years.”

She hoped this vague self-pity would rally some sympathy.

But this time, her gambit backfired.

Instead of siding with her as she’d expected, the friend fired back a message that cut straight through her.

“Elsie, you share no blood with the Harpers, yet you lived like a princess with their name for years-that’s already more luck t most people get. If the real lady held a grudge against you, you should’ve swallowed your pride, played nice, and known your place.

“But instead, you pushed things to this point. Now the head of the Harper family has publicly cut ties with you. Who in this cir you think will blame her and stand up for you?”

The brutal honesty made Elsie tremble with fury.

But she couldn’t afford to lash out; her position was far too fragile.

With nowhere to vent her venom, she ran to Melissa.

Melissa sat slumped on the sofa, phone clutched in her hand.

“Elsie…” she said, her voice cracking. “Your father… he really is divorcing me.”

Moments earlier, the Harper family’s lawyer had contacted her; the divorce papers had landed in her private inbox.

Melissa’s marriage to Zavier had always been a union of families. To protect both sides, they’d signed a prenuptial agreement e on, stipulating that assets accumulated separately during the marriage would not be subject to division.

In the divorce papers, Zavier had offered to pay her monthly alimony.

But the figure was insultingly small.

Barely enough to cover the cost of a designer handbag on a casual shopping trip.

And Melissa was unequivocally the party at fault.

If Zavier wanted to be ruthless, he could easily leave her with nothing at all.

Then came the final blow from her own family.

Somehow, the Blackwood family had caught wind of her schemes and learned that Zavier was filing for divorce. One by one, her elders and brothers called, not with comfort but with savage reprimands and stern warnings.

“Have you lost your mind, Melissa? How could you do something so reckless! You’ve humiliated the entire Blackwood name!”

Do Whatever it takes, beg if you have to, to keep your place as Mrs. Harper! If you end up divorced and cast out, don’t expect an support from us!”

The relentless blows crushed Melissa completely.

Her world was collapsing.

Her husband wanted to discard her. Her own family was ready to abandon her. It felt like everyone had turned their backs-exce the equally disgraced adopted daughter by her side.

Melissa buried her face in her hands, bolted into her room, and broke down in heart-wrenching soos.

Elsie stood in the living room, catching every desperate word of her mother’s phone calls.

Her heart sank too.

But unlike Melissa’s utter devastation, Elsie’s panic quickly turned to calculation. If Melissa really divorced Zavier, the money she get would be pitiful. And the Blackwood family was a dead end.

Still, Melissa had her biological son, Raymond. No matter how cold he acted, he wouldn’t let his own mother starve.

But Elsie had nothing.

The Harpers would never support her again. The Blackwood family had no ties to her.

She’d be left with absolutely nothing.

So she had to act fast before Melissa lost all value; Elsie needed to transfer every penny of her money into her own name.

Meanwhile, the banquet wound down.

Guests trickled out, one by one.

The Torres parents didn’t leave immediately; they retreated to a private study with Zavier for further discussion.

Raymond noticed the exhaustion shadowing Riley’s face, and his heart ached for her.

He turned to Sebastian, who had stayed by her side the entire time. “It’s been a long day. Take Riley home and let her rest.”

“Of course.” Sebastian nodded gently and began leading her away.

They’d taken barely a step when Raymond called after him, “Sebastian.”

Sebastian looked back to find Raymond studying him with a complicated expression.

After a few seconds of thought, as if untangling a knot in his mind, Raymond finally spoke, “So now that you’re married to Riley. shouldn’t you be calling me brother too?”
