Flora stood there, her mind reeling. The man at the very peak of the pyramid, the one she could only dream of reaching, was standing right before her. Yet thanks to that bumbling fool Simon, she had already made an abysmal first impression.
Regret gnawed at her, nearly making her grind her teeth to dust. She subtly stepped back, putting more distance between herself and Simon, as if physical separation could somehow sever their association.

With Riley and Sebastian’s arrival, everyone who had been mocked and threatened by Simon’s group the previous night was now present.
Facing the unified mockery in their expressions, Simon felt the weight of their scrutiny bearing down on him. But at this point, he had already lost all dignity. Losing a little more meant nothing compared to shouldering a six-million-dollar debt.
Bracing himself, he turned toward Sebastian and bowed deeply at a full ninety degrees, his voice trembling. “I’m sorry! I was drunk last night. I didn’t know who I was dealing with. I disrespected you and your friends. Please accept my apology!”
Sebastian, still holding Riley’s hand, stepped calmly to the center of the group. He looked down and gently smoothed a strand of her hair that the sea breeze had tousled.
Only then did he lift his gaze, letting it rest lightly on Simon’s bowed head.
“You were drunk last night. And just now, at the entrance, were you blind too?”
He was referring to how they had stopped Riley and Sebastian at the villa gate to mock them.
Simon stiffened, his mind racing. He didn’t hesitate for a second. Straightening up, he pointed directly at Flora, whose face had turned ashen, and began throwing her under the bus.
“No, it was Flora! She kept badmouthing you in front of us. She said you were just here to mooch off rich people! That’s why we kept misunderstanding! She’s the one who stirred it all up!”
“Simon!” Flora looked at him as if she’d been struck by lightning, her voice shrill with disbelief. “What are you talking about? I never said that!”
She never expected that the man who had been fawning over her only hours ago would turn on her so ruthlessly and dump all the blame on her.
But she had underestimated just how shameless someone could be when their own skin was

on the line. Simon had been happy to put her on a pedestal as long as it cost him nothing. A few flattering words, a bit of ego-boosting, that was easy.
Now, however, he was staring down a debt that could ruin him. In the face of such a crisis, the beauty meant nothing. Self-preservation was his only instinct.
All pretense of gallantry discarded, Simon stood his ground, his voice turning sharp and accusatory.
“Are you telling me you didn’t?” he fired back, words tumbling out in rapid succession. “Who was it that spent half the night complaining that your looks and money weren’t enough to get a second glance from him, and that he poured a drink on you just to defend his girlfriend?”
Flora’s face went from white to red.
When she stayed silent, Simon pressed harder, raking over every humiliating detail. “And later, when you were drunk, didn’t you tell us that if you were on your own turf, you’d slip him something and steal him away from that woman?”
Flora really had said that. After Sebastian had publicly humiliated her, she’d blurted it out in a desperate attempt to salvage her bruised pride. She’d forgotten about it almost immediately, never expecting Simon to drag it up in front of everyone.
It was as if she’d been stripped naked and put on public display.
Flora trembled with rage. If he wanted to play dirty, she’d play dirty too.
“Yes, I said that! So what?” she spat back, her voice shrill. “Simon, don’t pretend you’re innocent! I tried to stop you from taking those wines last night. Do you remember what you said? You said money didn’t matter; pride did. And look at you now; crawling like a dog, slapping yourself like a pro! Who’s the real fool here?”
Colin watched the group, a gleeful smile spread across his face. This was entertainment he hadn’t expected.
