Lydia was the one who had gone with Riley to check out that apartment back in the day, so of course she remembered exactly how to get there,
They took the elevator straight up to the top floor. As they stepped out, Lydia walked ahead like she owned the place and was already fishing her keys out of her purse to unlock the door.
But before her hand even reached the lock, the door swung open from the inside.
Standing there was a strikingly handsome guy with an air of cool detachment.
Since moving to Havenbrook, Lydia had seen her share of good–looking men.
But none of them had hit her with that kind of wow factor–like staring at human perfection itself.
Sebastian had clearly heard the elevator and came out to see who it was.
When he noticed a stranger at the door, his expression cooled almost imperceptibly. His sharp gaze skipped right past Lydia and landed on Riley behind her. “What took you so long?”
The familiar, casual tone made Lydia freeze in her tracks.
She slowly turned her head, eyes wide, staring disbelievingly at Riley’s calm face, then whipped back to look at Sebastian, who was giving off serious keep–your–distance vibes.
After a beat, Lydia let out a loud gasp and blurted at Riley, “Holy cow, Riley! You’ve been hiding a guy this hot up here? Since when?”
Faced with her best friend’s shocked, world–turned–upside–down look, Riley’s usual composure cracked with a hint of awkwardness.
She cleared her throat quickly and explained, “Don’t be ridiculous. This is Mr. Torres, a friend I met back in Nexopolis. It’s just a coincidence he lives right next door. I gave him my keys yesterday so he could sign for my furniture delivery.”
She was trying to rein in Lydia’s runaway imagination.
But Sebastian’s presence was just too overwhelming.
He stood there without even saying much, yet everything about him screamed refined and unapproachable.

After Riley’s introduction, he gave Lydia a brief glance and offered a slight, polite nod–which basically counted as a greeting.
That one look was calm yet intense, carrying the assessing quality of someone used to authority, but it wasn’t rude.
Riley then turned to Sebastian. “This is my best friend, Lydia–the one I told you about.”
“Nice to meet you,” Lydia managed, forcing a stiff smile.
Just minutes earlier downstairs, going after Lucas, she’d been unstoppable and full of fire. But now, facing Sebastian, she’d instantly turned into a quiet, well–behaved version of herself.
It couldn’t be helped. The guy was seriously good–looking–in a sharp, almost intimidating way that made any normal appreciation of looks feel inadequate.
But even more daunting was his deep, unreadable vibe, which completely shut down her usual playful banter.
He was exactly the type she was secretly intimidated by–the kind where one remark could kill a conversation and one look could make you clam up.
So Lydia wisely switched to quiet and polite mode, though her eyes kept darting between Riley and Sebastian.
Okay, there is definitely something going on here.
Riley ignored her silent scrutiny and walked into the apartment first.
That was when she noticed several delivery guys in uniforms still standing in the living room, looking unsure what to do. The larger furniture pieces–sofa, coffee table, dining set–were still wrapped in protective plastic and sitting in the middle of the room.
“I wasn’t sure how you wanted things arranged, so I didn’t have them move anything yet,” Sebastian said as he followed her in. “I was actually about to call you if you didn’t show up soon.”
“It’s fine,” Riley said, glancing at the pile of furniture. She offered the workers a warm smile, then turned back to Sebastian. “I’m not too picky about layout. Whatever’s easiest works for
me.”
She said it offhandedly, but Sebastian took it another way.
He glanced at Lydia, who was still sneakily studying him, and gave a slight nod without saying anything.
