Wesley barged into the house, practically vibrating with anger. “Who told you I was cheating? Have you been a housewife so long your brain turned to mush?”
Sydney’s cheeks were streaked with tears. “If she isn’t your mistress, then why did you call out her name in your sleep? And who was that woman you were whispering to on the phone last night?”
She didn’t stop. “And that recording—wasn’t it you offering to pay for her?”
Sydney’s chest ached so badly it felt like she could barely breathe. “Wesley, ever since my family lost everything three years ago, you’ve been looking for a way out, haven’t you? I really was stupid. Stupid enough to finally see the real you only today.”
“Maybe I got the wrong woman, but don’t act like you’re innocent.”
Wesley’s chest heaved as he glared at her. All at once, he snapped, his hand coming down across her face with a sharp smack.
Sydney froze, shock turning her tears into wide-eyed disbelief. “You hit me?” Her whole body trembled. “You really hit me…”
She started pounding on his chest, but he grabbed her wrists in one quick move, pinning her arms.
His eyes were cold. “Sydney, let’s get a divorce. I can’t do this anymore.”
He spat out the words, then stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
A minute later, Grant Goff came home, spinning a basketball on his finger. He took one look at his mom—red-eyed and shaking—and sighed. “Mom, did you and Dad just have another fight?”
He tossed the basketball on the couch. “Dad works hard all day. It’s normal for guys to have some fun on the side. Maybe you shouldn’t be so uptight.”
What hurt more than Wesley’s cruelty was this—her own son, the boy she’d raised, wasn’t on her side. “Grant, do you even realize how much it hurts to hear you say that?”
Grant rolled his eyes. “Mom, what does it matter? Hurt feelings don’t pay the bills.” He disappeared into his room.
Max wasn’t done with just one public statement. The companies run by Perran and Wesley were in free fall, their stocks crashing with no end in sight.
In the office, Otto glared at his brother and nephew. “What’s going on? Who did you two piss off this time?”
Wesley stayed silent. Perran, red with anger, lashed out and kicked Grant in the leg. “Tell your uncle what you did! Of all the people in the world, you had to go after Clarkson Corporation! Don’t you know how fiercely they protect their own?”
Everyone in the business world was talking about it. Clarkson Corporation had just shown the whole city what loyalty looked like. Overnight, it became the dream employer—who wouldn’t want someone like that backing them up? Working there was like having a golden shield.
Wesley’s jaw clenched. “Otto, I never thought Sydney would cause such a mess.”
Otto slammed his palm on the desk. “You really think this is just your wife’s fault? If you’d paid more attention to Grant, if you hadn’t been fooling around, if you gave a damn about anyone’s feelings, none of this would’ve happened.”
“Your son bullied a classmate and insulted his sister. And what did you do? Instead of apologizing, you tried to buy them off and throw your weight around. Then your wife barges into their office and makes a scene, not even caring about the facts. This is Clarkson Corporation—everyone who gets into their labs is top tier. You two just had to pick a fight with the wrong people.”
