She should have known. This wasn't just luck falling into her lap. Someone had stepped in, and it was obvious who.
Eleanor was absolutely sure that Billy had figured out her thing with Max by now.
She had barely set her luggage down in the room when the doorbell rang. Through the peephole, she spotted that tall, familiar silhouette in the hallway and couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
She really didn’t want to answer, but the doorbell kept ringing. There was no pretending she wasn’t home.
Eleanor pulled open the door, not even trying to hide her annoyance. “What do you want?”
Max slipped inside and locked the door behind him.
“Come on, babe, don’t be mad. I didn’t know you’d get caught up in this.”
“But relax, no one at work suspects a thing.”
Eleanor let out a huff. “Billy already knows about us.”
“You told him, didn’t you?”
Max put his hands up like he was surrendering. “I swear, I didn’t say a word. Your boss is just sharp, okay? He figured it out himself. This has nothing to do with me.”
“All right, don’t be mad. Is your room big? If not, we could always share tonight.”
Eleanor shot him down. “I have work to do. You should leave.”
She really meant it. Eleanor pulled her laptop from her bag, plugged it in, and sat at the desk, looking very busy.
Max almost laughed. He leaned over her chair, bent down, and kissed her, shutting her up completely.
He didn’t hesitate, just deepened the kiss until she lost track of everything else.
Because she was sitting, Max easily picked her up, sat down himself, and set her sideways on his lap. The whole move was smooth, and their lips never even broke contact.
Eleanor melted into his kiss, her mind swimming and her breath short.
Max finally opened his eyes, a mischievous grin tugging at his lips.
He took her hand, still pressed to his chest, and slowly trailed it down over his abs, slipping her fingers under his shirt.
Lost in the moment, Eleanor didn’t even realize where her hand was headed until he was guiding her to his belt. That’s when the doorbell rang again.
“You’re way too kissable, you know. I could kiss you all day.”
Eleanor pinched his waist. “Seriously, shut up.”
God, why was her marriage of convenience suddenly so hot? Someone explain that to her.
“I’m going downstairs.”
“Hold up,” Max said, grabbing her waist. “Are you really going down looking like that?”
Eleanor glanced in the mirror and groaned. Her hair was a mess, her lips red and puffy, her eyes all soft and dreamy.
“Max, this is your fault!”
He just laughed, sounding genuinely happy for once.
“Go fix your makeup. I’ll head out first, so no one gets suspicious.”
Back when they first got married, he hated the whole secret relationship thing. Now, he was starting to realize it was actually kind of fun.
