Samuel still couldn’t figure out why Max wanted to meet with him.
“Mr. Clarkson.”
“Samuel.”
Max greeted him with a nod, and then—unexpectedly—pulled out a chair for him. Samuel sat down, caught off guard. Everyone said Max was difficult, aloof, maybe even arrogant. He never bothered with pleasantries, never acted friendly toward anyone. So what was going on today?
Samuel tried to play it cool. “Well, Mr. Clarkson, I have to admit, I didn’t expect you to invite me out.”
Max gave a small, polite smile. “We’re friends. We should talk more.”
Friends? Samuel’s face twitched. Since when? As far as he could remember, this was the first time the two of them had ever sat down together alone. And it wasn’t even about business. Max was just making small talk, barely touching on anything important. It was weird.
The strangest part was when Max handed him a cigarette and then lit it for him, like they were old buddies. Samuel’s hands trembled a little as he smoked.
When the cigarette burned out, he stubbed it in the ashtray, glancing at Max, who was impossible to read.
Suddenly, Max stood up. “Samuel, I have another meeting soon. Let’s catch up again when we both have time.”
The whole meeting had been strange from start to finish. Samuel left the office in a daze, still trying to figure out what that was all about.
Inside, Max called for his assistant. “Take this ashtray and get it tested. Make it quick.”
…
Eleanor went shopping that day. Maybe it was the pregnancy, but she wandered straight into the baby section without even thinking. She picked out a bunch of things, and then, on a whim, stopped by a clothing store to buy some loose, comfy clothes she could wear as her belly grew.
She was just leaving when she spotted Jessie Goff walking out of a baby store a few doors down. Eleanor raised an eyebrow. Was Jessie pregnant too?
Jessie spotted her, looking as smug as ever, like she’d already forgotten all the drama from before. “Oh, Eleanor, fancy seeing you here. I’m picking up things for my baby. Did you not hear? I’m pregnant.”
“Eleanor, what are you doing?” Jessie cried, tears glistening in her eyes. “I already said I’m sorry for everything I did before. Why are you being so mean, especially when you know I’m pregnant?”
Adam rushed over, dropping to his knees beside Jessie. “Jessie, are you okay?”
“My stomach hurts, Adam!”
“We’re going to the hospital.”
Adam helped Jessie up, giving Eleanor a look full of anger and blame. “What is wrong with you? Why are you so cruel? Jessie already apologized.”
Eleanor didn’t even try to argue. “If you’re so worried, maybe get your head checked at the hospital too. I’m starting to think your stupidity is incurable if you actually believe what you just said.”
Adam looked like he might attack her, but two bodyguards stepped in front of Eleanor right away.
Max had secretly arranged for them to protect her, never telling her so she wouldn’t worry.
