When Eleanor told Max about the plan, he could only grumble about Linden in his head. As he rubbed her waist, he sighed, “Babe, do we really have to bring two third wheels with us?”
Eleanor shot him a look. “Come on, Yolanda and Mr. Sidler have helped us so much. They finally got married, but things are still a little rocky between them. If we can help, we should.”
Max was always a goner when Eleanor got like this. “So how do you plan to make it up to me?”
She looped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his. Max’s eyes darkened, and he kissed her back without a second thought.
She was just past the three-month mark, and Max was doing his best to take things easy. Still, every kiss with her made him feel like he was losing control, like he was pulling her soul straight to him. Her breathing hitched, and she collapsed against his chest.
For a moment, the only sound in the room was their shared, tangled breaths.
The kiss only broke when Eleanor’s nightgown slipped low, baring her smooth, pale shoulder with two deep marks where his lips had trailed.
She finally pulled away, a little breathless, and smiled. “Alright, I’ll take that as a yes.”
Max’s eyes were still heated, his voice low and teasing. “Just wait till these ten months are over. You’re in trouble, little one.”
Eleanor’s cheeks turned pink, and she scooted away from him. Ten months felt like forever, but right now she was more than happy to play the pregnancy card and act a little spoiled.
…
Linden was just leaving the office when Max called him out of nowhere, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Bro, honestly, how can you be so clueless when it comes to your wife?”
Linden frowned, totally thrown. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t even think about it.” Linden pulled her into his arms. “I already got chewed out by Max. If I’ve taken the blame, I’m definitely going.”
…
The weekend was perfect, and Eleanor took three days off without a second thought to follow Max to Echo Island. After the private jet landed, she wanted to drag Yolanda off for some pictures, but Max had other ideas. He wrapped his arm firmly around her waist. “Didn’t you want your best friend and her clueless husband to patch things up? If you keep sticking to her, how are they supposed to work it out?”
“Come on, let’s enjoy ourselves and leave them to it.”
So, just as Yolanda turned around, she realized Max had already made off with Eleanor. She and Linden were left standing there, staring at each other.
Linden broke the silence. “Did you bring a swimsuit?”
Yolanda nodded. “Yeah. Are we going for a swim?”
