Ever since Summer had been brought into the pack as the shaken victim of whatever incident she was in when my parents found her, she had spent every waking moment trying to be perfect. She took lessons in everything–piano, etiquette, and especially horseback riding. She knew it was Edward’s favourite hobby, so she had trained like a woman possessed to impress him. I knew I was competing with a capable woman and a professional in the sport, but j knew what I was doing too.
“You seem very confident, Ellie.” Summer said as she approached me, her eyes flashing with a nasty glint. “How about we make this interesting? The person who loses is going to go live and sing the praises of the other person?” she said with a smile.
I didn’t answer right away. I knew her; whenever she suggested something like this, it meant that she had a plan. She took my silence for fear and puffed out her chest. “What’s the matter? Are you worried your natural talent will run out when you actually have to compete? Or are you just scared of losing to me in front of everyone?”
You guys remember when I told you I had a feeling Summer was going to invite a lot of people? Well, I was wrong. Because she invited the whole pack to watch, tagging it under the Queen competing with her sister in a horse race?
Who wouldn’t be excited to see that? I mean, I would. So the whole Moon Vale was filled up, and Owen has been coming to thank me for bringing this kind of attention to his club; he knew how much it would cost him tonight.
“Im sure you know this isn’t a fair fight. You’ve been training for years, while Eloise is not trained at all.” Olivia chipped in.
I reached out and touched Olivia’s arm to calm her down. A slow, dangerous smile spread across my face. My wolf was pacing in my mind, ready to tear Summer apart.
“I’ll do it,” I said, my voice smooth and calm. “But that bet is too mild. Come up with something crazier,” I told her, and her eyes widened. She was probably shocked by how confident I was. Well, guess what? I was also shocked.
She then lit up with greed; she wanted to humiliate me so severely that she could taste it on her tongue. “The loser has to stand at the entrance of the Moon Vale club during the weekend rush, holding a massive sign that says I’m a pathetic liar and I lose to the better woman.’ Everyone in the high society will see it. Deal?”
The crowd gasped because that type of public shaking ruins a person’s reputation for life.
Edward stepped forward, looking worried. “Summer, that’s too much. Eloise, don’t listen to her, you don’t have to do it.”
I looked Edward straight in the eye, feeling nothing but disgust. I don’t know why he feels like playing the saviour here will make me feel any different from the way I already think of him? Weirthink about, if Summer wants to ruin herself in public, I’m happy to give her the chance.”
Summer turned pale with rage, but she didn’t back down. “Fine! It’s a deal.”
She turned to Edward and put on her best innocent pout; she looked like she was suffocating to the outside world, though. “Edward, you’ll be the judge, right? I want to show you how much I’ve improved.”
This girl is funny. Why did she feel like her being with Edward would make me feel some way? Was I supposed to be raging jealous? Weird.
Inifnired them and turned my head toward the VIP balcony. Damon was standing there, his powerful arms crossed over his chest, and I was sure he had heard everything that just went down. Our eyes met, and the air between us practically sizzled. He didn’t look worried. He gave me a slow, supportive nod that sent a jolt of heat straight to my core. He looked so fucking good in the suit

he had on.
Was this how I was going to be longing for him now that we had had sex?
The tension in the arena was so high that you could feel it in the ground. Summer went to change into her gear, returning in a tight, chocolate brown riding suit that left very little to the imagination. She was riding a chestnut mare named Nightshade, a horse known for its speed.
I had already changed earlier, but she was socializing around like this was some socialite event.
I mounted Simba, my massive black stallion. He sensed my energy and let out a mighty snort, his muscles ripping under his dark
coat.
We lined up at the starting gate. Summer looked over to me, a smug smile on her lips. “It’s not too late to beg for mercy, Ellie. I might let you off the hook if you get on your knees.”
