ELOISE.
The drive away from the luxury boutique was quiet, but the tension in the car could be cut with a knife. Fania’s grip were white as she gripped the steering wheel. She kept glancing at me through the rearview mirror, and I could tell that she had something to say. Her eyebrows were pulled together in frustration, and she kept pursing her lips together.
“Ma’am, with all due respect, why did you allow them to speak to you like that?” Fania asked with a tight voice. “I was about to step out of the car. I was two seconds away from marching in there and telling them exactly who you are. If they knew you are the personal guest of the Lycan King, they would have been on their knees begging for mercy.”
I looked out the window, watching the city blur by. The anger from the encounter was fading, leaving me feeling tired but strangely light.
“It's fine, Fania,” I said softly.
“It's not fine!” she said, though she kept her tone respectful. “That man you called your brother said terrible things about you, and that woman accused you of stealing. You have the most powerful backing in the world right now. One word from you and the King would have destroyed their reputation before they could even blink.”
I signed and turned to look at her. “I know, and I appreciate you wanting to defend me. Really, I do.”
“Then why?” she pressed. “Why let them think they still have power over you?”
“Because for years, I was helpless,” I said, my voice steady. “For years, I had to take their insults because I had nowhere to go and no one to run to. I was just the unwanted daughter.”
I paused, thinking about the look on Julian’s face when the card was approved.
“But today, I wasn't helpless.” I continued. “I didn't need the King’s title to make them look stupid; I just needed to stand my ground. If I had used the King’s name immediately, it would have been his own victory, not mine. I needed to show them, and myself, that I am not the same girl they threw away. I'm not worth their insults, and honestly, they aren't worth my time and energy anymore.”
Fania looked at me in the mirror, her expression going soft. “I understand, ma'am. You handled yourself with grace, but next time, please let me scare them a little?”
I laughed, a genuine sound. “Deal.”
We arrived at the Obsidian Hotel a few minutes later. It was the most luxurious hotel in the city, a towering building of black glass and steel. Fania pulled up to the private entrance, and the staff rushed to open the door for me.
“The King booked you the penthouse already. Rest well, ma'am. I'll be downstairs if you need anything.” Fania said as she handed me the key card to my penthouse.
I thanked her and took the private elevators up. When the doors opened, I stepped into a room that was bigger than the entire house I grew up in. The floors looked so smooth and shiny because they were marble, and the furniture blended in with the interior. However, what took my breath away was the breathtaking view of the city. The room I was staying in before didn't have this view, and I loved it.
I walked into the room and collapsed onto the massive bed. It was soft, with a scent of lavender and an expensive bedspread. I closed my eyes, letting my muscles relax. I had a few hours before the King came to pick me up for dinner. I needed to shower again, do my hair, and mentally prepare myself to walk into a room filled with powerful wolves.
Just as I was about to drift into a light nap, the phone Fania gave me buzzed on the nightstand.
I frowned. Nobody has this number except Fania.
I picked it up. The screen showed a blocked number.
That's strange.
My heart skipped a beat, and I slid my thumb across the screen to answer.
