I arrived at Aunt Laura’s house just as the sun was beginning to burn through the morning mist.
The house smelled of expensive tea as usual. Aunt Laura liked costly things, and are teas were always an example of that. My Aunt and her daughter were huddled together, laughing as they trimmed the thorns off a bunch of blood–red roses. It was hard to believe that only two weeks ago, Laura was fighting for her life on my operating table.
“Hey, beautiful people.” I greeted them as I approached. “Aunt Laura, you’re looking more radiant every time I see you,” I said, setting my medical kits on the table. Well, more like herbal kits.
Laura’s eyes lit up, and she reached out, her grip surprisingly strong for someone still recovering.
“It’s all because of you, my darling. I can only be grateful to you and you alone. You gave me my spirit back. I thought I would never feel my wolf move again, but thanks to your healing, I feel her yapping under my skin again.”
I smiled, checking her vitals, as a healer who had spent years surviving in the rogue’s camp. I knew how vital a wolf’s connection meant to our kind.
“Your recovery is a miracle, but you still need more rest. Ang dizziness?”
“None at all, I’ve been sleeping like a newborn pup,” she promised, then her expression shifted into a mischievous grin. She brought out two shimmering silver envelopes from the side table.
“Hey, Eloise, how are you?” Olivia greeted with a smile.
“Sweetheart. I’m okay. How’s work?”
“Work has been going well, surprisingly. People like me, and I’m happy that I can sell my stuff here.”
“Good, remind me to tell Damon to help with that location you said you wanted,” I told her, and she nodded.
“You’re the best.”
“Now that you guys are done with your greeting. There is a charity gala at the Moonluxe hotel this Saturday. It’s the biggest event of the season. And it’s for the Pack’s younger members. One of my old friends invited me as a VIP old member, but I don’t think I have the strength for the high–end gossip and everything that comes with that night.”
Olivia practically bounded off the sofa.
“Eloise! Please, I haven’t been out in public since I got back to the territory; everyone thinks I’ve turned into a hermit. Plus, I need to network and let the other young girls know about my business. Help me out, please? And if we go together, we can gossip about girls who are not classy and elegant.”
I bite my lip. High society events like this were usually an excuse for the young ladies of the pack to show off their clothes, new fashion designers, and other things. It was superficial and exhausting, but seeing the hope in Olivia’s eyes, I couldn’t say no to her.
“Fine, I’ll go,” I said with a smile. “But don’t expect me to be the life of the party.”
“Dont worry,” Laura said, her voice dropping to a serious tone. “Just make sure to watch your backs, u heard that Summer will be in attendance,” she said with a bit of worried look on her face.

“She can’t do anything. I’m not the scared little kid she used to kick around.”

The Moonlixe hotel was a palace of glass and gold. But the time Olivia had already arrived on the night of the charity gala. The ballroom was already packed. The air was so thick and full of a choking mix of expensive perfume and the dominant pheromones of high–ranking wolves here trying to outdo one another.
I kept my chin up, feeling the weight of the silk dress that Olivia basically begged me to wear.
“Dont look now,” Olivia whispered, leaning in close. “The snake is at twelve o’clock.”
I didn’t have to look, I could smell Summer’s scent from a mile away. She was walking towards us, draped in a gold dress that looked more liquid metal than fabric.
“Eloise! Olivia!” Summer cried out, her voice a pitch–perfect imitation of joy.
“I was so worried when I didn’t see you on the guest list my brother handled. I nearly sent a car to fetch from whatever…the little shack you’re staying in these days. I’m so glad you could make it to the real event.”
She smiled, but her eyes remained cold and predatory. This was her turf, and she wanted me to know it.
“We managed just fine, Summer,” I replied with a calm and steady voice. “Aunt Laura handles the invitation that actually matters.”
Before Summer could respond, the new friend that she had been walking with these days, Lillian, stepped forward. She was the daughter of the old Beta. She had a reputation for being the pack’s biggest gossip. And she had never liked me; she looked at me with pure, unfiltered disgust.
“It really is a miracle you’re here, Eloise,” Lilliam said loudly enough for the surrounding guests to hear.
“I mean, after being kidnapped by those filthy rogues and living like an animal in the dirt for all those years, I’m surprised you still even remember how to use a fork. This must be a shock to your system, being around actual, civilised wolves.”
A few people nearby snickered. I didn’t know if they were disgusted or not, I wasn’t going to do too much today, I was about to be coronated Queen, so I had to learn the art of elegance and being classy.
I didn’t flinch; instead, I just took a sip of my champagne and let my gaze travel from Lillian’s overstyled hair down to her shoes.
“You’re right, Lillian. It is a shock.” I said, a sharp smile tugging at my lips.
“I spent years seeing the raw and honest side of nature. Coming back here to see how much effort you put into painting over your insecurities with cheap glitter… it’s definitely…uhhhh what’s the word now?” I pretended to itch my hair. “Oh yes, eye–opening. It’s definitely eye–opening.”
