ELOISE.
I could feel Olivia’s widened eyes on me.
“How do you know?” She asked me, and I smiled.
“The real one would have muted, earthy tones from the mineral dyes of that era. This one is practically glowing with synthetic pigments,” I explained, watching as a man three tables over raises his paddle, bidding a small fortune for a piece of junk.
I didn’t say a word to the rest of the room; this was a charity auction after all. If these people wanted to spend their money on expensive lies to feel important, who was I to stop them?
I just took a slow sip of my champagne, feeling the cool liquid hit my throat. I had come here expecting a fight, but this wasn’t even a challenge.
I looked at Summer, who was staring at the stage with a blank, hollow expression. I realized then that I didn’t need to shout to be heard. I just needed to tell the truth. And in a room full of people built with lies, the truth wouldn’t just hurt, it would destroy a lot of things.
The auctioneer’s voice droned on, but the atmosphere at the table had shifted. These vultures probably thought they had some power when they saw me. Did they think I would cower to them? Did Summer not tell them that I wasn’t the same girl I was when ! got back from the rogue camp all those years ago?
I wonder what made them think they could make me feel small, especially since I was about to marry the most powerful man in the world. Who did they think they were? The thought almost made me start laughing, but I held it in.
The vultures were still preening, but their feathers were ruffled. They were desperate for a win so bad, anything to prove that their world of silk and silver was still superior to my world of scars and survival.
The second item was brought out on a velvet cushion. An Azure moonstone bracelet. It was delicate, its stones shimmering with a pale, ethereal light that seemed to pulse like a heartbeat.
Olivia’s breath hitched; she leaned in, her voice a tiny thread of hope. “Eloise, look at that. It’s beautiful. It reminds me of the old stories my grandmother used to tell about the first lunar bond.”
I focused my eyes, letting my wolf instincts sharpen my vision. The clarity of the stones was profound, with a glow from the mineral rather than a surface polish. It was the real deal, a piece of history that actually carried a trace of the lunar energy.
“It’s authentic, Olivia,” I whispered. “The vibration is streaky. If you want it, go for it.”
Olivia hesitated, then raised her paddle. “Five hundred thousand,” the table went quiet.
The vultures exchanged looks, but none of them moved; they didn’t see the value in something so understated. They were looking for flash, for gold, and for things that screamed expensive. The auctioneer’s gavel sounded.
“Sold to the lady in the back!”
Olivia beamed, her cheeks flushing with joy. “I can’t believe it, I thought for sure that Summer and a pack of vultures would try also to buy it just to be spiteful,” she whispered.
“They are still busy nursing their egos back to good health; don’t be bothered about them,” I said, glancing at Summer.
