Chapter 93 Danger

The memory of Summer’s face at the auction was still very fresh in my mind, a delicious little victory that I ticked away for a rainy day. Watching her scramble away to pay 1.5 million dollars for a piece of glass was better than any champagne I couldn’t have sipped in that VIP room. She thought she could outshine, but the tables had turned, and that wasn’t happening again.
However, my satisfaction was short–lived; I had more important things to worry about than a spoilt socialite’s tantrum.
I was on a journey to do my job. The drive to the edge of the city was silent. I pushed the auction out of my mind and focused on the list of herbs. The store I was going to was one I had seen in my dreams. I’ve never been to these places, but for some weird reason, I kept having dreams about going there. So I was headed there right now.
According to the dream, the store was a hole–in–the–wall place known to only those who dealt in the supernatural or the very wealthy. When I stepped into the wellness store, the bell chimed softly. The air was thick with the smell of dried lavender and bitter roots. The owner, an old man with eyes that in sure had surely seen a lot. He looked familiar; I think I might have seen him in my dream.
“I need these,” I said, sliding the lust across the counter because it was necessary to show him what I needed, plus these are the things that the dreams left me to get.
He adjusted his glasses, whistling low. “Young lady, these herbs aren’t cheap. A few of them are incredibly hard to find. This Silver- root alone costs more than most people’s cars.”
He looked at my simple clothes, his expression turning sceptical. He probably thought I was some girl playing at being a witch.
“Money isn’t the problem.” I interrupted. I didn’t have time for judgment. I pulled out a sleek, black titanium credit card–a gift from Damon and placed it firmly on the counter. “I just want the real thing, no substitutes, no fillers.”
The owner’s eyes remained the same; he didn’t look surprised by the card. He looked up at me and then tilted his head as if he was trying to figure something out. I wanted to know what he was trying to figure out; his eyes were moving around so fast.
“What’s your name, young lady?” he asked.
“Eloise,” I replied without missing a beat because I wasn’t ready to waste time here.
“Oh,” he said, and his eyes lit up weirdly. “You. I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, and I frowned.
“Excuse me? Do you know me?” I asked, but he just shook his head.
“I don’t, and I do. Don’t bother yourself with the unnecessary details, just come in through the back,” he said and walked away without waiting for me to reply.
Hesitantly, I walked into the attic behind the shop with him. But the time I caught up with him, he was holding a black plastic bag. He looked at me and then stretched it toward me.
“Take it,” he said, and I frowned.
“Im sorry, but the things I need are the ones I wrote on that list,” I said carefully.
“They are inside here, and the other things you need, too. Take,” he repeated.

I covered the steps between us and collected the plastic from him. I opened it up and saw several herbs inside.
“Thank you,” I told him, and he smiled weirdly, as if in a smile that would send shivers down your spine.
I was about to start leaving when he held up his hand.
“Eloise, don’t waste time. You need to hurry up,” he said.
“Excuse me?”
Both of you need to wake up and find yourself quickly. Or else, the world would be destroyed,” he said to me, and I was about to ask what that even means, and the next thing I knew…..
Everything went dark.
By the time I opened my eyes, my environment was strange. I was sitting, and when I looked around, I was in my car.
My car?
I looked to the passenger seat and saw the plastic bag I had collected from the older man. Weird.
I could have sworn that I walked into the store to buy these things. How did I get he
here?
Fuck.
I was about to start my car when I remembered the older man’s words. He said “both of you“-who did he mean?
Shit. I didn’t have time for this; I needed to get to Damon as soon as possible.
As I started driving back, I noticed that this part of the city was desolate, bordered by thick forests that belonged to the neutral territories. I was humming a small tune, my mind wandering, when a slight movement caught my eye.
“What the-?”
A small figure darted between the trees, sprinting directly into the path of my car. My heart leapt into my throat, and I slammed on the brakes, the tyres screeching against the asphalt. The car jolted to a violent stop, missing the figure by mere inches.
I say there for a second, my hands shaking on the steering wheel. I scrambled out of the car, my heart pounding against my ribs.
“Are you okay?” I shouted, running to the front of the vehicle.
A young girl, maybe ten years old, was huddled on the ground. Her clothes were torn, and her hair was a bird’s nest of twigs and dirt. She was pale, her eyes wide with terror, and my wolf growled with sympathy.
“Im fine…im fine. Someone was chasing me, and I just ran,” she sobbed.
