Chapter 161
Jason’s POV
81
I adjusted the strap of my backpack, taking a deep breath of the familiar Spring Valley air as I crossed the territory boundary. The scent of
pine and wildflowers filled my lungs – home at last. After weeks in the northern pack lands helping with security protocols against rogue
attacks, returning to Spring Valley felt like slipping into a favorite worn jacket.
Feels good to be back early, doesn’t it? Nikan, my wolf, rumbled contentedly in my mind.
“Damn right it does,” I murmured, running a hand through my dark hair. “One week ahead of schedule. Matthew will be surprised.”
The rogues had been dealt with more efficiently than expected, allowing for my early return. Now all I wanted was a hot shower, real
coffee, and maybe to check if that beauty – Julia’s sister was still around. The photographer with eyes that saw too much.

I smiled at the memory of Sophia White. When we’d first met, she’d been all sharp edges and defensive wit, hiding her insecurities behind
a smartphone and sarcasm. But in our brief encounters before I left for the north, I’d seen glimpses of something more talent, passion,
and a hunger to break free that resonated with my own restless spirit.
“Wonder if she’s still here,” I said to myself, taking the forest path that would lead to the community center. Spring sunlight filtered
through the trees, dappling the ground with gold. “Or if she took those photography school applications seriously.”
The path curved through a section of wildflowers and opened to the eastern gardens. I slowed, something pulling at my senses – a scent
that made Nikan suddenly alert, ears forward in our shared mental space.
Do you
smell that? my wolf asked, an unusual intensity in his tone.
I inhaled deeply. Something sweet with hints of vanilla and storm clouds, unique and inexplicably compelling. My heart rate picked up as
I followed the scent around the bend into the flowering section of the garden.
And there she was.
Sophia knelt among a patch of blue wildflowers, her camera raised, completely absorbed in capturing the perfect shot. The morning light caught in her hair, giving it auburn highlights I’d never noticed before. She wore a black t–shirt and jeans with hates in the knees, but to
me, she suddenly looked like the most fascinating creature I’d ever seen.
Something powerful and primal crashed through me like a tidal wave. My skin tingled, every sense heightening until I could hear het
heartbeat, count her breaths, track the small movements of her fingers adjusting the camera lens.
Mate, Nikan whispered in awe. She’s our mate.
1 froze, the realization stealing my breath. She must have recently awakened her wolf. The connection coulbyt form until both wolves
were present.

Chapter 161
As if sensing my gaze, Sophia suddenly looked up. Our eyes locked across the garden, and I saw the exact moment awareness hit ber–her eyes widened, lips parting in shock as her camera lowered slowly to her lap.
“Sophia,‘ I called softly, taking a step forward.
The movement broke whatever spell held her in place, in a burst of motion that surprised me, Sophia scrambled to her feet, clutching her camera to her chest, and bolted in the opposite direction.
“Wait!‘ I called, confusion mixing with an instinctive need to chase. “Sophia, stop!”
But she was running full–tilt down the garden path, dark hair flying behind her. Despite my bewilderment, I couldn’t help but admire her speed and grace – her wolf clearly lending her strength even in human form.
Why is she running? Nikan growled, agitated by our mate’s retreat. Chase her!
I didn’t need the encouragement. My body was already moving, following Sophia’s fleeing form through the gardens. But instead of taking the same path, I veered left, cutting through a service passage I knew connected to the main pathway. Sophia might be fast, but I knew these grounds like the back of my hand.
1 emerged from the shortcut just as Sophia came racing around the corner. She slammed directly into my chest with enough force to knock the breath from my lungs. My arms automatically wrapped around her to steady us both, and the moment of contact sent electric currents racing across my skin. The sensation was so intense that I nearly let go in shock.
‘Let me go! Sophia gasped, struggling in my hold. Her scent was intoxicating up close, filling my head with a dizzying mix of desire and
protectiveness.
“Not until you tell me why you’re running,‘ I replied, keeping my voice gentle despite the thundering of my heart. I didn’t expect a welcome home party, but this is definitely a first.”
Her gaze darted up to my face, then away, cheeks flushed. “You don’t feel it?‘ she whispered, her voice breaking slightly.
“The mate bond? Oh, I definitely feel it,” I said, unable to stop a small smile from forming. It’s kind of hard to miss, honestly.”
“It’s so… overwhelming. Sophia said, her breathing unsteady. I saw you and it was like being hit by itghtning. Everything just. amplified. I couldn’t think I panicked.”
1 loosened my hold slightly but didn’t let go completely. I understand. It surprised me too. My thumb brushed across her wrist where held it, feeling her rapid pulse. But running away isn’t going to make it disappear, you know.”
“I know that,” she snapped, a flash of the feisty personality I remembered showing through her panic. I just wasn’t prepared to… Her voice trailed off as she swayed slightly
1 frowned, noticing the pallor replacing her earlier flush. Sophia? Are you okay?
