Matthew’s POV

The Alliance meeting was over, and I watched Eric White’s retreating back as he headed toward the exit. My heart pounded against my ribs while Hati prowled restlessly in my mind, urging me forward.

Go after him. NOW! Hati growled. Don’t let him leave.

I’d spent the entire two–hour meeting distracted, barely contributing when called upon. Finding out that Eric was now Alpha of Star Shadow instead of Julia had thrown me completely. Where was she? Was she safe? The questions had tormented me throughout the proceedings, and now Eric–the only person who could answer them—was about to walk out the door.

“Eric! Wait!” I called out, my voice echoing down the empty hallway.

He stopped but didn’t immediately turn around. I could see the tension in his shoulders, the slight tilt of his head as he considered whether to acknowledge me. When he finally faced me, his expression was guarded, eyes narrowed with obvious wariness.

“What is it, Collins? I have an hour’s drive ahead of me.” His tone was clipped, professional, but the underlying hostility was unmistakable.

“I need to talk to Julia,” I said directly, closing the distance between us with purposeful strides. ‘I need to explain why I left.

Eric let out a cold laugh, shaking his head. “If you expect me to play messenger for you, that’s not happening. This is your mess, you deal

with it.” He turned to leave again.

“Wait, please!” The desperation in my voice surprised even me. Alpha wolves don’t beg–we command, we negotiate, we lead. But here ! was, practically pleading with another Alpha.

Hati didn’t care about protocol or pride. Stop him! Our mate is in his territory!

Eric paused again, turning to face me with crossed arms. “What?”

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. Td like to formally request entry into Star Shadow territory.”

Eric’s eyebrows shot up, and a calculating look crossed his face. “You know, as an Alpha, you could actually make that request through official channels. A phone call, an email, or have your Beta relay the message. Why this… personal approach?

“I’m not coming as an Alpha,” I said quietly, meeting his gaze with steady determination. I’m coming as a wolf who but his mate’s heart and knows he was wrong.

“Mate?” Eric’s expression shifted to genuine surprise, his eyebrows climbing higher. “You mean Julia?”

“If she’ll still have me, yes.” The words came without hesitation, though my heart raced with the fear that I might have already lost my chance. My fingers trembled slightly–a rare display of nerves for an Alpha wolf.

Eric studied me silently, seeming to evaluate the sincerity of my words. Then, unexpectedly, the corner of his mouth twitched upward in a smile I couldn’t quite interpret.

“You know what? I might approve your request, but I have one condition. His tone suddenly lightened, taking on an almost mischievous quality. “Call me ‘brother.”

I blinked, momentarily stunned by the request. This was a test–I knew it immediately. Eric was gauging how far I would go, how much Alpha pride I was willing to sacrifice for Julia. Hati growled indignantly in my mind, but my own determination overrode his instinctive objection.

“If it means seeing Julia again, brother, I’d do anything.” The words left my lips without hesitation, my voice clear and firm.

To my surprise, Eric actually looked embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck as his expression softened. “Damn, you really do love her, don’t you? I didn’t expect you to agree that quickly.”

center this week. She usually returns home after sunset.” He paused, then added with a slight smile, “Bring wildflowers if you can especially those blue cornflowers. She used to collect them as a kid. Every time I made her mad, that’s how I’d apologize.”

I was taken aback by his unexpected kindness, gratitude washing over me. “Thank you… that means a lot.
