I considered my options, my mind racing through possibilities. “Not back to school,” I said finally. “Too many innocent people there. That
would just create more potential casualties.”
The weight of my decision settled over me like a physical thing. “I need to go back to Star Shadow,” I continued, my voice growing stronger with conviction despite the tremor of fear beneath it. “Face Nathan directly. Figure out what he really wants.”
“This is my responsibility,” I explained, meeting Matthew’s gaze directly. The confession between us had somehow made it easier to hold his eyes. “Nathan is doing this because of me. If I can just talk to him, maybe I can end this without anyone else getting hurt.”
“Absolutely not.” Matthew’s voice dropped an octave, low and unyielding, but there was something else there now–a personal concern that went beyond his duty as Alpha. “You just saved Olivia and that baby’s life. There’s no way we’re sending you into danger.”
“But-”
“No.” The word was final, his stance unwavering. “If we need to talk to Nathan, we do it on our terms, with protection. Not by offering you
up as bait.”

that took my breath away. The soft glow from the house illuminated
her as she carefully cradled the baby, her movements so natural, so
tender.
Hati, my wolf, stirred within me. Look at her. She gave life today.
I couldn’t look away. Something long dormant inside me cracked open, a feeling I’d buried alongside Rachel’s memory.
“It’s a boy,” Julia said softly, her eyes meeting James’s. “A healthy baby
boy Your mate is asking for you.”
le a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob as he ast her into the house. I remained frozen on the bottom step, le to move, unable to process the strange warmth spreading
through my chest.
Julia’s eyes shifted to me, widening slightly at my disheveled appearance and the blood staining my clothes. “Are you hurt?” she asked, professional concern replacing the maternal glow.
I shook my head. “It’s not mine,” I managed to say. “How is Olivia?”
“Tired but well. The delivery was complicated–breech position–but she’s strong.” Julia stepped forward, bringing the baby closer to me. “Would you like to meet the newest member of your pack?”

I hesitated, then climbed the steps until I stood before her. The baby’s face was tiny, perfect, with a shock of dark hair like James’s. Without thinking, I reached out, my finger gently touching his small hand.
The baby’s fingers instinctively curled around mine, and something
inside me shattered completely.
“Thank you,” I said, my voice rougher than intended. “For what you did today. For helping them when we couldn’t be here.”
Julia smiled, the expression lighting up her tired face. “It’s what I do.”
…” I started, then stopped, uncertain how to continue. I needed ell her about the attack, about who was behind it. “There’s something you should know.”
Her smile faded at my tone. “What happened out there?”
I took a deep breath. “The attack was coordinated, planned. We found evidence that it was… Nathan. Nathan Reynolds. He’s recruiting
rogues, targeting our pack.”
The color drained from Julia’s face. Her arms tightened protectively around the baby, and I saw fear flash across her features. She knew exactly what Nathan’s presence meant–and why he might be here.

hearing, a faltering rhythm that sent chills down my spine.
“Olivia,” I said, making a critical decision. “We can’t wait any longer.
On the next contraction, I need you to push while I help guide the
baby out. This isn’t ideal for a breech birth, but the baby’s in distress.”
She looked terrified but nodded bravely. As the next contraction built, I positioned myself, recalling every detail from my training.

“The heart rate’s dropping,” I warned, hearing the faltering beats. “One more big push, Olivia!”
With a primal scream that probably echoed throughout the
community center, Olivia gave one final, heroic push. I maneuvered carefully, supporting the tiny body, easing the shoulders through, and finally, with a slippery rush, the baby’s head emerged.
I cleared the airway immediately, my fingers trembling slightly as I
