Ian Winters acknowledged the order and got out of the car, walking away without a single backward glance.
Jasper Shaw opened his car door, straightened his turtleneck, and strode into the apartment building.
With the New Year just around the corner, most of the people who worked out of town had returned.
Jasper Shaw noticed a distinct increase in the number of people around.
He navigated the familiar route to Chloe Sinclair’s apartment and knocked lightly on the door.
Before long, the pitter-patter of footsteps was heard from inside.
CLICK—
The tightly shut door suddenly swung open, revealing a head of fluffy hair.
Jasper couldn’t resist reaching out and giving her hair a couple of ruffles.
Chloe Sinclair, caught off guard by the sudden attack, clutched her head and shot Jasper Shaw a reproachful glare.
"What are you doing here?"
Jasper Shaw stood outside. Seeing the young woman leaning against the doorway with no sign of letting him in, he knew he’d overdone it.
So he put on an appeasing smile. "I came to see you."
Chloe Sinclair raised an eyebrow. "Sutton told you?"
Jasper Shaw didn’t try to hide it. "I asked him."
Chloe didn’t dwell on it. She stepped back and held the door open. "Come on in."
Jasper Shaw breathed a sigh of relief and hurried inside.
As soon as he stepped inside, Jasper felt a wave of warmth wash over him. He couldn’t help but take off his jacket and toss it on the sofa.
Chloe Sinclair poured him a glass of warm water and asked, "Things not busy at the company lately?"
"Not busy."
At Jasper Shaw’s quick reply, Chloe Sinclair gave him a rare glance before lowering her eyes again.
"So you’ve learned how to lie now."
If she recalled correctly, the time leading up to the year’s end was Jasper Shaw’s busiest period.
