Chapter 234: Chapter 153: Visiting Elder Xiao (Part 2)

As soon as he heard it was a book, Xiao Chen instantly lost interest.

"Are you all packed?"

"I’ve been ready for a while. We can leave anytime." To be honest, Su Chen was a little excited. After all, he had only ever seen figures like Elder Xiao on television.

As they left the courtyard house, Chen Fei had already driven the car to the gate.

Su Chen was just about to open the car door and get in when he heard Xiao Chen’s voice. "Su Chen, we don’t need to take the car. It’s not very far, let’s walk."

"Huh?" Su Chen glanced at Xiao Chen, a little surprised. Though confused, he did as he was told and closed the car door, also asking Chen Fei to take the things out of the trunk.

Seeing the case of wine in Chen Fei’s hands, Xiao Chen smiled, held out his own hands, and said, "Give it to me!"

Seeing this, Chen Fei looked at Su Chen, then at Xiao Chen, momentarily unsure if he should hand it over.

’If I give it to him, I’m not doing my job as a bodyguard. If I don’t, I’ll make Xiao Chen lose face.’

Su Chen understood Xiao Chen’s unspoken intention. He looked at Chen Fei and said, "Just give it to Brother Cheen. Since we aren’t using the car, you can just drive it back to the garage."

Chen Fei was no fool. He understood immediately. The place they were going wasn’t suitable for him.

"Yes, sir!" Chen Fei didn’t linger and turned to get in the car.

As the car drove off toward the garage, Xiao Chen gestured for Su Chen to follow, and the two of them walked along Houhai, heading further north along the bank.

After walking for four or five minutes, they turned into a hutong. After a few twists and turns, they arrived at a courtyard house with bamboo planted on both sides of the entrance.

The courtyard house looked rather unassuming. In fact, its exterior seemed a bit lacking compared to Su Chen’s own.

They had just reached the gate, and Su Chen thought Xiao Chen would knock. Instead, the door opened on its own. Behind it stood two imposing figures, the waists of their jackets bulging.

One look at the scene and Su Chen knew exactly what was going on.

He was about to step inside when one of them held out an arm to stop him. "Excuse me, we need to do a search."

Su Chen didn’t mind. It was his first time here, so a necessary search was to be expected. It was their job, after all.

He was just about to spread his arms when Xiao Chen, who was standing beside him, said, "No need to search him. He’s a guest personally invited by Elder Xiao."

At these words, the two men’s previously expressionless faces showed a hint of surprise. Their gazes lingered on Su Chen’s face for at least two or three seconds before moving away, as if trying to memorize his features.

"Please!" The two men quickly stepped aside to open the gate.

Walking from the front courtyard to the central one, Su Chen discovered that the inside of this compound was anything but simple. It was completely different from what he had seen on the outside.

The interior was decorated in a modern style, yet it retained the original character of a courtyard house. The overall impression was that of a rustic, pastoral home. This was especially true in the central courtyard, where a massive tree grew, its canopy shading half the area.

An old man with slightly graying hair was sitting in a lounge chair in the shade of the tree, leisurely reading a book. On the tea table beside him was a steaming cup of tea and a radio playing a crosstalk performance.

Xiao Chen walked quickly to the old man’s side and said in a low voice, "Elder Xiao, Su Chen is here."

The old man, who was reading, turned his head and saw Su Chen standing a short distance away.

He put down his book and waved at Su Chen with a smile. "Why are you standing so far away? Come, sit down. Have some tea."

Seeing this, Su Chen quickly walked over. He bowed slightly and said, "Elder Xiao, Happy New Year. I heard you enjoy reading, so I specially picked out two books for you."

As he spoke, he offered the bag in his hands.

Hearing that Su Chen’s gift was books, Elder Xiao became a little curious as to what they were. He took the bag, pulled out the box inside, and didn’t forget to invite Su Chen to sit.

Su Chen glanced at the seat next to the tea table but didn’t dare to sit down. ’Wouldn’t that mean I’m putting myself on equal footing with Elder Xiao?’

He looked toward Xiao Chen, hoping for some help.
