Su Chen had barely sat down after getting home when his mother, Chen Shufen, walked up to him with a stick in her hand, her expression stern.
"What’s wrong, Mom? You’re kind of scaring me!" Su Chen edged back on the sofa.
"Xiaochen, I just looked it up on my phone. That car of yours is worth over three million!"
"That’s over three million! Your father and I have worked hard our entire lives and couldn’t even earn a fraction of that. How could you make millions in just a few years? Tell me... did you do something illegal?" As she spoke, Chen Shufen couldn’t hold back her tears.
Hearing his mother’s words, Su Chen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Su Chen had prepared himself for an interrogation on the way home, but he hadn’t expected it to start so soon.
"Mom, please stop crying. I didn’t do anything illegal. This is all money I earned myself! It’s absolutely clean!"
As for the excuse, Su Chen had already thought of it on his way back. He would say he made the money by trading stocks with a big shot from Shanghai.
Su Chen felt he had no other choice; it was the only excuse that seemed plausible at the moment.
He had even planned out all the follow-up details.
"You really earned it? You didn’t get involved in anything illegal?" Chen Shufen asked, still skeptical.
"Really! I earned all this money trading stocks with a tycoon in Shanghai. It’s from a completely legitimate source, Mom. You can rest assured!"
"Stock trading? Why would someone help you trade stocks for no reason?"
"Well, that’s a bit of a long story!" Su Chen said, feigning a sigh.
WHACK!
The stick slapped down next to Su Chen, making him flinch.
"If it’s a bit long... just take your time telling it!"
Although Chen Shufen’s fierce expression looked terrifying, Su Chen knew it was just a mother’s way of showing concern for her son.
No one wants their children to go down the path of breaking the law.
"Actually, it’s not that long. When I was a security guard in Shanghai, I happened to find a lost child. The stock market tycoon who helped me was the child’s father."
Hearing Su Chen’s explanation, Chen Shufen stared at him for a while before finally putting down the stick.
"Xiaochen, it’s good to be helpful, but don’t expect a reward for your kindness. You’ve made a lot of money thanks to him, so you should know when to quit while you’re ahead!" Chen Shufen said in a heartfelt tone.
Su Chen was a bit surprised to hear this. In his mind, his mother had always been a typical rural woman, concerned only with household gossip. ’How did her perspective get so broad all of a sudden?’
"Hmm?" Seeing Su Chen’s dazed expression, Chen Shufen harrumphed loudly.
Snapping out of it, Su Chen quickly said, "Mom, don’t worry. I already pulled out all my investments before I came back."
"Ahem... so how much money do you have now!"
Hearing this, Su Chen felt his head go numb. He’d just remembered that in their home province, the women were the masters of the house and the ones who controlled the purse strings.
"W-well... not that much. Just over 260,000!" Su Chen felt a pang of regret. ’If I’d known, I wouldn’t have withdrawn the last two days’ earnings this afternoon.’
Chen Shufen held out her hand. "Transfer two hundred thousand to me. I’ll keep it for you to use when you get married. You can keep the remaining sixty thousand-plus for yourself!"
Su Chen had wanted to put up a fight, but when he saw his mother pick up the stick again, he swiftly transferred the two hundred thousand.
When Chen Shufen saw the confirmation text on her phone, her face instantly bloomed with a satisfied smile.
"Good boy. What do you want to eat tonight? Mom will make you whatever you want!"
"I want braised pork belly and sweet and sour pork ribs. You can decide on the rest!" Su Chen had been craving his mom’s cooking for a long time.
"Alright! I’ll go buy groceries right now!"
Chen Shufen grabbed a basket and headed out the door.
When he had arrived earlier, his mother had told him about the neighborhood’s amenities. There was a large supermarket right downstairs from their building, making grocery shopping very convenient.
Seeing Chen Shufen leave, Su Chen flopped onto the sofa.
