Kade held my gaze for a long moment, something unreadable flickering in his eyes, as if he were weighing how much to say and how much to keep to himself. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm, almost too calm.
“I don’t know.”
He paused briefly, then met my eyes without flinching. “You were really worked up last night. I held you so you wouldn’t hurt yourself, and after a while, you settled down.”
The explanation sounded reasonable on the surface, but it felt incomplete, like entire pieces of what happened had been quietly left out. I studied him carefully, trying to read past his
composure.
In the past, whenever I lost control during a nightmare, the aftermath was never this clean. Things got destroyed, people got hurt, and once at Silvermoon Pack, I had nearly killed an Omega attendant without even realizing it. Compared to that, last night had been unnaturally calm, and that alone made it hard to believe nothing else had happened.
Still, Kade clearly didn’t intend to say more, and pushing him would only make things worse.
“Thanks for last night,” I said, meaning the way he had stayed with me the entire time.
He looked like he was about to respond, but before he could say anything, Tessa’s voice came from outside the door.
“Nira, are you up?”
I glanced at Kade, and he immediately understood, turning and walking into the bathroom without a word.
“I’m up,” I called back, quickly running a hand through my hair before heading to the door.
The moment I opened it, Tessa leaned in slightly, her eyes scanning the room with curiosity. “Were you talking to someone just now?”
I didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, I was on the phone.”
She accepted that easily and slipped her arm through mine. “Perfect timing. There’s a new place near campus everyone’s been talking about, and I really want to try it. Come with me?”

“That sounds good,” I said, already thinking it worked perfectly as an excuse to get her out so Kade could leave unnoticed.
Tessa chatted the entire way, her energy bright and constant, but I found myself only half listening. After a moment, I casually tested the waters.
“Hey, did you hear anything weird last night?”
She looked at me, confused. “Weird how?”
“Like noise or something,” I said lightly.
She shook her head without a second thought. “No, I slept great. Didn’t hear a thing. Why, did something happen?”
“Not really,” I replied, keeping my tone casual. “I just heard there’s a new neighbor who throws late–night parties and makes a lot of noise. If you didn’t hear anything, maybe they already moved out.”
“Oh, got it,” she said, completely convinced, and didn’t question it any further.
We had just stepped outside when Derrick showed up.
He was holding a neatly packaged box, his expression warm, though the slightly messy state of his hair made it obvious he had rushed over.
The moment Tessa saw him, her eyes lit up, even if her tone tried to play it cool. “What are you doing here?”
Derrick walked up to her and handed over the box. “I brought you something from your favorite bakery.”
She opened it, and the second she saw what was inside, her face brightened. “That place is so far from campus. It’s just dessert, you didn’t have to go all the way out there.”
Even as she complained, the smile on her face gave her away completely.
Watching them fall back into their usual rhythm, I couldn’t help but smile. They had grown up together and understood each other effortlessly, and if they ever became bonded mates, they would probably end up happier than most pairs who relied on fate alone.
After Tessa left with Derrick, my phone rang. It was Agatha.
She had already arranged for someone to pick me up and take me to choose a dress and get styled for the Flores family banquet that evening.
