She was already too close to stop herself. The moment her balance gave out, her entire body tipped straight toward me like she expected me to catch her.
I didn’t.
I shifted my weight back half a step and pivoted cleanly to the side, the movement controlled and effortless. The tray in my hand stayed perfectly steady, the mini desserts untouched as if nothing had happened at all.
For me, that level of reaction was nothing unusual. Years of training as an alpha heir had made sure of that.
Apparently, the same couldn’t be said for everyone else.
A few nearby guests had caught the movement, and the looks on their faces bordered on ridiculous, like they had just witnessed something beyond belief.
I didn’t care.
I had barely looked away when a sharp scream split the air.
The girl in the red dress lost all control and went crashing straight into the wine table behind me. Glass shattered on impact, bottles tipped and spilled, and deep red wine spread quickly across the carpet, soaking through the fabric as the scent of alcohol filled the space.
People recoiled in alarm, the noise drawing more attention.
By the time she pushed herself up, she looked like a complete mess. Her hair was tangled, her dress soaked through with wine, bits of shattered glass clinging to the fabric.
She lifted her head and glared at me, fury written all over her face.
“Did you trip me?” she snapped. “I felt it. Someone stuck their foot out right before I fell.”
I folded my arms, not even bothering to hide the chill in my expression.
“Don’t start making things up.”
Her voice sharpened immediately.

I didn’t move. I simply held her gaze and let a trace of Lyra’s presence bleed through, just enough to press against her instincts.
The effect was immediate.
Her face drained, and she stumbled back like she had run into something she couldn’t fight fear creeping into her eyes before she could hide it.
Right then, a steward from the Flores family stepped in, smooth and composed as if he had, been waiting for the moment.
“Miss, are you alright?”
She didn’t look at me again. Not once. Her body was still trembling as she let him help her up, and within seconds she was escorted away from the scene.
Staff moved in just as quickly. Broken glass disappeared, wine stains vanished, and the entire area was reset with practiced efficiency.
Within minutes, it was like nothing had ever happened.
I watched it all with a quiet sense of detachment.
If that had been meant as some kind of setup, it wasn’t even worth responding to.
After I finished eating, I stepped out of the main hall and into the back garden, needing a break from the noise.
Most people were still inside, busy making connections and working the room. Out here, it was quiet, almost empty, the kind of calm that felt rare at an event like this.
I followed the path at an easy pace, letting the silence settle.
That was when he stepped out.
He came from behind a line of hedges, tall and blocking the path ahead of me like he had been waiting.
One look at him was enough.
His eyes were sunken, his complexion flushed in a way that didn’t look healthy, and the way he looked at me made my skin crawl.

A hybrid.
I didn’t need to think about it. I could smell it.
