At the same time, the atmosphere in Kade’s office remained sharp and controlled, the kind of cold that never really lifted.

He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, tooking out over the city, his expression unreadable, fits focus somewhere far beyond what was in front of him.

His phone rang.

He picked it up.

“Sir,” Jett said on the other end, his tone steady. “We’ve almost completely dismantled the Vance family’s fretwork. What’s left is already contained and under our control.”

Kade gave a quiet acknowledgment, his voice even. “And the other group?”

There was a brief pause before Jett answered, a hint of hesitation slipping through. “We’ve found some leads. It looks like they’re tied to an underground organization connected to the Pack Alliance over in Meridia. They’re extremely careful, though. We don’t have a clear picture yet.”

Something in Kade’s expression shifted instantly, his wolf eyes sharpening as a cold edge surfaced. “Keep digging. I want everything.”

“Yes, sir.”

The line went quiet for a moment.

Kade lowered the phone slowly, his gaze darkening as he looked back out the window.

“Whoever it is,” he said under his breath, his voice calm but laced with something lethal, “if they thought they could touch what’s mine and walk away…”

He let the sentence trail off, but the meaning didn’t need finishing.

They wouldn’t.

Nira’s POV:

I stayed in for two days to recover before heading out for the Shadowgrid Squad evaluation, and since I didn’t mention the injury, Alden assumed I had spent the time training, which worked perfectly for me.

By the time we arrived at the hotel designated for the assessment, the lobby was already filled with candidates, and the moment I stepped inside, I could tell this wasn’t going to be an easy field. The air carried the distinct presence of high-level pureblood Lycans, each one confident in their own ability, each one here for the same reason.

Shadowgrid Squad didn’t take average applicants.

As one of the top CTF teams, it attracted the best every year, but very few actually made it through. This time, the stakes were even tighter, one official slot, three reserve spots, and far too many people who believed they deserved them.

Alden went to handle check-in, leaving me off to the side.

The line wasn’t moving anytime soon, so i pulled out my phone and started a game, letting the surrounding noise fade into the background.

That was when I heard them.

“So that’s Nira?” a girl’s voice said, not bothering to keep it subtle.

“Yeah, that’s her,” another voice answered quickly. “That’s the one Valerie mentioned.”

I didn’t look up, but I listened.

“She doesn’t look like much,” the first girl continued, her tone dripping with open disdain. “And she doesn’t even have a wolf. I don’t see why Damian would even notice her.”

Her friend didn’t hesitate to pile on. “Exactly. Someone like her wouldn’t even qualify to work for you. She probably just pulled some cheap trick to get his attention and now thinks she matters.”

That earned a satisfied laugh.

“Let’s go,” the first girl said, her tone sharpening. “I want to see this up close.”

Their footsteps stopped right in front of me.

“Hey, Nira.”

I glanced up briefly, then went right back to my game, giving them exactly as much attention as they deserved, which was none.

That was enough to set her off.

Her hand shot out, grabbing for my sleeve. “I’m talking to you. Are you deaf?”
