Damian gave a quiet signal to his assistant, and within seconds the man stepped forward holding a velvet jewelry box that looked like it belonged behind glass, not in someone’s haqds.
Damian took it and walked it over himself, offering it to me with both hands, his tone measured and disarmingly sincere. “Miss Soren, this is a small gesture from me, an apology on Valerie’s behalf. I hope you’ll accept it.”
I didn’t reach for it. I only glanced down.

Inside lay a necklace that was impossible to ignore, the kind of piece that didn’t just scream money, it whispered power. The centerpiece was a rare pink diamond, deep-toned and flawless, cut to catch light from every angle. Around it, a ring of smaller blue diamonds shimmered like a night sky wrapped around a single glowing star. It wasn’t just expensive, it was the kind of thing collectors fought over.
I frowned slightly and pushed the box back toward him without touching it. “That’s way too much. I can’t take it.”
Agatha leaned in, curiosity getting the better of her, but the second she saw it clearly, her breath caught. “Wait… this is Tear of Dawn. It went for over sixty million at that international auction not long ago. So you were the one who bought it?”
That only made my refusal firmer.
I slid the box back another inch. “You should keep it, Damian,”
My tone stayed even, controlled. “And just so we’re clear, whatever happened between me and Valerie stays between us. I’m not going after the Flores family over it.”
I had turned him down more than once now, and most people would’ve taken the hint, or at least shown some irritation.
Damian didn’t.
He accepted the box back without the slightest shift in expression and handed it off to his assistant like none of it mattered. Then he gave a faint, almost regretful smile. “Guess this piece just wasn’t meant to end up with you.”
The air had gone a little stiff, and Agatha jumped in quickly, her smile bright but a touch forced. “Alright, that’s enough of that, everything’s settled now. Damian, since you’re already here, why don’t you stay for dinner? It’ll be nice to have everyone together.”
He nodded easily. “I’d like that.”
I hadn’t planned on staying, but Eli was there, and leaving now would only create more noise than it was worth, so I stayed.
Eli clearly saw this as an opportunity and moved fast, all smiles and courtesy. “Mr. Flores, please, take this seat ”
He didn’t look at me once.
Damian didn’t even follow the gesture. Instead, he walked straight past him and stopped beside me. “I’ll sit here,”
Before I could respond, he pulled the chair out and sat down next to me.
The moment he did, Lyra stirred sharply inside me, restless in a way I couldn’t ignore. Something about him put her on edge, and that alone was enough to put me on guard, I steadied her, lowered my gaze, and picked up my phone, pretending to scroll through

Dinner started, but Damian didn’t let it stay neutral-for long. He kept finding ways to draw me into conversation, slipping in questions, comments, anything that would pull my attention back to him without making it obvious.
Across the table, Eli noticed.
More than once, I caught the way his expression tightened, irritation flashing through his eyes before he masked it. He finally cut in, steering the conversation away from me. “Mr. Flores, the project we’ve been collaborating on has been progressing well. When would it be convenient for you to go over the details in person?”
Damian turned his head slightly, giving him a brief look that carried just enough distance to be unmistakable. “Mr. Soren, I’ve already handed that project off to my team. If anything comes up, they’ll contact you directly.”
