Chapter 156 Fleeting Peace
Nira’s POV:

I held my breath instantly as my heart beat faster. Vague footsteps and low murmurs drifted over from afar.
“I never expected this guy to be so skilled,” a hoarse male voice cursed impatiently. “He can flee so fast even with a badly injured companion whose wolf spirit remains dormant. We will make them suffer harshly once we catch up.”
“Stop talking nonsense,” another deep and cold voice responded. “Our leader issued a strict order to hunt them down. Search thoroughly. They must be hiding somewhere nearby.”
My mood turned heavy at once. I gripped the hidden weapon tightly, ready to fight back anytime.
A warm large hand suddenly covered mine gently. I looked up and saw Kade shake his head softly at me.
He leaned close to my ear and spoke in an almost inaudible voice, “You are hurt. Leave everything to me.”
Kade pulled me behind a thick tree. We stayed pressed closely together, breathing as quietly as we could.
Footsteps drew nearer, accompanied by the creak of broken branches. Each sound struck straight at my racing heart.
I felt Kade’s pulse racing too, his chest rising and falling. Still, his arm wrapped protectively around me stayed firm and steady.
“There is nothing here. Do not waste time and search elsewhere,” one hitman said in obvious irritation.
“Fine, let’s check over there,” the other man agreed.
Their footsteps faded away gradually.
“They are heading for the cave,” Kade whispered softly right beside my ear.
I nodded and felt a little relieved.
“Why did you stop me from killing them just now?” I wondered. Those men would quickly trace our tracks once they found clues inside the cave.

Kade slowly let go of me and explained, “Killing them is easy, yet either of us will leave personal scent behind. The rest of the group can still locate us by tracking the scent left on the
bodies.”
I nodded in agreement. “What are you going to do next?”
Kade glanced around the surroundings. “Wait for me here.”
He turned around and walked quietly down another narrow path.
Soon he came back with a relaxed look on his face.
“I left traces of our scent on another path on purpose,” he whispered. “They will think we fled that way, which buys us time to recover our strength.”
My heart felt mixed and touched watching him run around to protect me. As the heir to the Alpha King with powerful top–tier wolf spirit, he could easily shake off all pursuers if not for my presence.
Kade crouched in front of me. “I will carry you. We can move faster and hide more easily.”
I nodded my approval.
Kade carried me for some distance and found a concealed spot. He set me down gently. “Let us rest and have some food before moving onward.”
I nodded. I still felt weak physically, yet I knew I could not push myself too hard in such danger.
I sat on a stone and rubbed my sore arm gently. “You should rest too. You have carried me such a long way and must be tired.”
Kade shook his head and crouched down to check my wound. “I am fine. How is your injury feeling?”
I stared down at my arm and replied softly, “It has not split open, though it still aches badly.”
I pointed at his backpack. “Hand me your bag. There is medicine inside.”
Kade took out the medical supplies quickly. I taught him the proper way to apply it to gain the best healing effect.
Kade spread the processed herb carefully over my wound and spoke gently. “It may sting little. Bear with it.”
