“Oh, look who we have here–it’s the great Soren family princess,” one of the girls sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “What’s the matter? You still have the nerve to show your face around here after Mr. Howell dumped you?”

Another girl jumped in. “Seriously. I heard Mr. Howell was the one who broke off the engagement. I’ve been saying it all along–someone like you, who doesn’t even have a wolf spirit, could never be good enough for him. Getting dumped was only a matter of time.” My eyes narrowed dangerously, and I shot them a cold, sharp glare. “Beat it,” I growled.

None of them took me seriously. One girl just kept running her mouth. “What’s the matter? Hit a nerve because we’re right? You think being top of the department and making it into Shadowgrid Squad makes you something special? You’re still worse than a low–ranked Omega without a wolf spirit. And the Howells still dumped you. How pathetic.”

I clenched my fists slightly, fighting the urge to let Lyra out and tear her throat open.

Right as I was about to fire back, a voice I didn’t recognize came from behind me. “Hey, don’t you guys have anything better to do? Mind your own damn business.”

I turned and saw Rachel Davis–the senior who’d asked me to join her research project before. A few other seniors were with her, and they all smelled like high–ranked wolves.

Rachel stepped forward, her wolf eyes flashing as she fixed a cold stare on the girls who’d been running their mouths. “Nira’s under our protection,” she said. “If any of you talk trash about her again, don’t say we didn’t warn you.”

Those girls clearly hadn’t expected anyone to stand up for me, especially not a high–ranked wolf. Rachel’s stronger presence immediately cowed them, and fear flashed across their faces.

One of them tried to act tough, stammering, “We… we were just joking. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?”

Rachel let out a cold laugh. “Joking? Everyone can see exactly what you were doing. Now get out of here. You’re blocking the view.”

With that, the girls backed down and scurried off, not forgetting to glare at me as they went, muttering, “What’s the big deal? She just has people backing her up.”

Once they were gone, Rachel turned to me and patted my shoulder. “Nira, don’t let them get to you. They’re just jealous. They see how well you’re doing and will grab any excuse to tear you down.”

I gave her a small, grateful smile. “Thanks. I’m fine.”

Another senior came over and laughed. “Nira, don’t let it bother you. You’re amazing. You’ll find a way better mate when the time comes.”

I nodded. I wasn’t actually upset or hurt by any of this, but the kindness still made me feel warm inside.

Rachel took the stack of papers from me and handed them to the senior beside her. “Come on,” she said gently. “Let’s go grab a drink at the bar and unwind. Don’t let those idiots get in your head.”

She started pulling me along. I hurriedly said, “But I still need to drop these papers off for Mr. Kim.”

“Don’t worry. He’ll take them for you,” she said, and dragged me off.

Not long after, Tessa showed up.

The second she saw me, she fumed, “Nira, you wait right here. I’m going to go find Mr. Howell and ask him what his deal is. What right does he have to dump you? He’s so ungrateful. He only woke up because of you, and now he’s trying to kick you to the curb? What a jerk. I’m done idolizing him.”

I held my drink and said calmly, “Actually, I’m the one who ended it.”

Tessa froze. Her eyes went wide, and her wolf ears shot up in surprise. “You… you did?” She stared at me in disbelief for a long moment. “Why?”

I took a sip of my drink and said evenly, “No big reason. I just thought the engagement was too much of a pain, so I ended it.”

Tessa was speechless for a second. Her face shifted from shock to confusion and finally settled into a complicated kind of helplessness.

She scratched her head and mumbled, “But… but that’s Mr. Howell! First in line to be Alpha King! So many she–wolves would kill for a chance to be with him. He’s that good. And you’re okay with letting him go?”
