Damian was waiting by the school gates, dressed in a sharp, tailored suit with a friendly smile that made him look like the perfect gentleman.

If Lyra hadn’t already been awake inside me, I might have actually bought the whole nice–guy act.

Too bad for him—the moment he stepped closer, Lyra caught the scent of his wolf spirit. Underheath that polished surface, it was violent, restless, and downright bloodthirsty.

“Nira, it’s been a while,” Damian said, his tone gentle and almost concerned,

I eyed him warily, my guard immediately up. “Mr. Flores, is there something you need?” My voice came out cool, with no room for small talk.

He didn’t seem bothered by the chill in my tone. That warm smile stayed put. “I heard about you and Kade calling off the engagement. Just wanted to check in.

“That guy’s got no gratitude,” he went on, shaking his head. “If you hadn’t agreed to bond with him back then, who knows if he’d even be alive now. And look what he does once he’s back on his feet–drops you without a second thought. It’s pretty hard to watch.”

I kept my expression neutral. “Mr. Flores, that’s my personal business. I don’t need anyone worrying about it for me.”

Damian’s smile tightened slightly, and he gave a helpless shrug. “Nird, you don’t have to be so defensive with me. I know things aren’t easy right now. The Soren family cut you off, and Kade walked away.

“But if you’re interested,” he lowered his voice, “I could help you get back in with the Sorens. Hell, I could help you get more than that.”

I held his gaze, my tone firm. “I appreciate the thought, but I don’t need your help. And I’m definitely not going back to the Soren family.”

Breaking ties with them had been my choice from the start. There was no way I’d ever go crawling back.

Something shifted in Damian’s expression, but he smoothed it over quickly.

He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a near–whisper. “Come on, don’t be stubborn. You’re on your own now–no wolf spirit. no backup. How are you supposed to take on the Sorens and the Howells by yourself? Work with me, and I’ll make sure you get whatever you want.”

A cold laugh escaped me. “Mr. Flores, aren’t you getting ahead of yourself? I told you–stay out of my business.”

The last thing I needed was Damian stirring up trouble and dragging the Soren family back into my life.

Without another word, I stepped around him and walked away.

The whole run–in with Damian left me uneasy. Before, I could maybe see him taking an interest because of Kade—but now that the engagement was over, what did he want from me?

Was he really trying to team up with Kade’s ex just to get back at him?

Listening to everyone buzz with excitement, I felt a little dazed.

The head coach’s smile turned sly, his voice buzzing with energy. “Well, X9 has agreed to come coach here at our grounds. Not jur visit–they’ll be leading our prep for next month’s match.”

The whole place erupted.

“Oh my god–X9 is actually coming? Am I dreaming?”

“With X9 training us, that trophy next month is basically ours.”

I felt a spark of anticipation too. Was I finally going to meet the mentor I’d only ever known through a screen?
