I used a fake ID to rent the room at the far end of the hallway. Kade laid Desmond down on the bed, his expression tight with worry.
“I’m going to grab some food and supplies,” Kade said, pulling his disguise kit from the bag. “Stay with him. Don’t open the door for anyone.”
About ten minutes later, I watched through the window as a stooped, white–haired old man shuffled slowly away from the motel–a flawless transformation. You’d never guess it was Kade.
Turning back to Desmond, I checked his breathing. It was steadier now.
I’d even asked Lyra to reach out with her senses; she’d told me his wolf spirit felt stronger, which was a good sign. He was healing.
Still, my mind kept drifting to my birth parents. I had no idea whether my father had found my mother yet, and the worry sat like a rock in my stomach.
I was lost in thought when I spotted Kade returning through the same window. He carried two overstuffed plastic bags, still in the old–man getup. After scanning the area carefully, he slipped back inside.
“Did you deal with the cameras?” he asked quietly, already peeling off the disguise to reveal his sharp features.
I nodded, fingers still moving across my laptop keys. “Every camera within five hundred yards is looping. The police won’t track us here for now.” My eyes shifted to the bags. “Did you get the medication?”
Kade set the bags beside the bed and pulled out antibiotics and some high–calorie nutrition shakes. “This was all I could find without raising suspicion. Hopefully it’s enough.” He glanced toward Desmond, who lay still on the sheets. “How is he?*
“Stable. His wolf spirit is recovering slowly, but there’s no telling when he’ll wake up.”
I took the medicine and started measuring a dose. “What’s it like out there?”
“Manhunt bulletins are everywhere.” Kade’s voice turned grim. “Richard’s determined to wipe all of us out.”
The weight of it hit me again–Kade, an Alpha King heir from Veralle, was now on the run in a foreign territory, hishing from the authorities… all because of me.

I looked up to apologize, but before I could speak, he just rested a hand gently on my head, as if to say it’s okay. Then he pulled out a loaf of bread and several bottles of water from one of the bags. “Eat something. We need to keep our strength up.”
I took the food without much appetite. “I keep thinking about my mom…”
Kade sat beside me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. His voice was steady. “They’ll be alright. And we will find them.
I leaned into him and nodded. “Yeah. We’ll get through this.”
Once I’d forced down a few bites, I had Kade help clean Desmond up. While changing Desmond’s shirt, Kade’s hand stilled—then
he tore one of the buttons free.
His face paled. “Shit. This is a tracker.”

My stomach dropped 1 snatched the tiny device, rushed to the toilet, and flushed it away. “They’ve been tracking him this whole
Snapping my laptop shut, I stood up. “We need to move. Now.”
on cue, tires screeched outside the window
Kade and I exchanged a look–both of us braced for a fight, He was already hauling Desmond over his shoulder.
“Back door?” he asked, adjusting Desmond’s weight.
“The cameras show they’ve got the alley covered too.” I pulled up the live feed on my phone. “Our only chance is the fire escape.”
Just then, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Kade motioned for me to stay back, then pressed himself flat against the wall beside the door. The footsteps stopped outside. A faint metallic scratching followed someone was picking the lock.
“Go!” Kade hissed.
He kicked open the small vent window in the bathroom, helped me climb through first, then struggled to maneuver Desmond’s limp pody out after me.
A second later, I heard the motel room door crash open. My heart hammered against my ribs.
We were in Meridia now–Kade, as an outside Alpha King heir, couldn’t use his wolf spirit energy here without risking exposure.
If his high–tier white wolf form was spotted, his real identity would be blown. An unauthorized Alpha heir in Veralle was a diplomatic disaster waiting to happen.
All I could do was hope he could handle these enforcers without shifting.
After what felt like forever, Kade finally leaped out the window to join us. We took off into the narrow back alley.
That was when I caught the smell of blood. A deep gash ran across his shoulder–claw marks.
“You’re hurt!*
“It’s nothing.” he insisted, already repositioning Desmond across his back. “Keep moving!”
We hadn’t even cleared the alley when two uniformed officers stepped into view ahead, weapons drawn.
